As he appears in the muster rolls of 1713 for the first time as a free man http://www.eggsa.org/transcriptions/monsterrollen/1713/mr_1713_intro.htm and the piece that Andre Groenewald quoted (from an unpublished book) is so specific about when he landed and that he was employed by the VOC , I suppose the next place to look would be the muster rolls of VOC employees from 1709 to 1712 (Cape Archives VC 40). These usually do record place of birth and rank. Unfortunately I do not have access to those and the Cape Archives does not allow one to have them photographed. So it will have to rest as unsolved at the moment.
