    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA] Scottish Place Names in the Free State
    2. Dave Long
    3. Many Scots helped build the Main Rail Line from Port Natal to the Reef in the late 1800's. The Natal Govt Railways, for whom most of them worked, also built a branch line from Ladysmith into the Free State. This may explain why there are some farms or places with distinctly Scottish names in that province. Two farms that are of interest to me are Stratherrick and Glen Urquhart. I have exhausted the Internet and am now hoping that someone who has one of those old SA Place Name books could please do a look up to see if there is any mention. Alternatively, someone may just know who gave these two farms their names and if there is any history available? I realise that a trace of the property transfers records at the Deeds Office is also a solution. However, I am not based in the province (and it is usually a very time consuming process).
