    3. Could some knowledgeable Lister tell me if there was an Aliwal North AND an Aliwal South? I have extracts of TROLLIP baptisms in Aliwal North with exact dates. However, when I look at the Aliwal images (there are several others as well) these baptisms are not to be found. 3. As Bruce pointed out and this reference confirms, Mossel Bay seems to have been known as Aliwal Zuid http://books.google.nl/books?ei=lH4NTq6WNsWeOq2F-L8L&ct=result&id=B2pKAAAAYAAJ&dq=%22Aliwal+Zuid%22+and+zuid+afrika&q=%22Aliwal+Zuid%22

    3. "Aliwal North is named in tribute to Sir Harry Smith.[1] Sir Harry Smith, then Governor of the Cape Colony, formally founded the small town of Aliwal North in the Cape Province of South Africa in 1850. He named the town "Aliwal" in memory of his victory over the Sikhs at the Battle of Aliwal during the First Sikh War in India in 1846, and "North" in opposition to Aliwal South (now Mossel Bay)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aliwal_North Regards, Francois _____________ Francois Greeff, 36 Aston Road, London, SW20 8BE, United Kingdom Phone: 0044 20 8123 4224.
