In the 1970's there was a Briton who was FireChief in Pietermaritzburg. Not sure of his name spelling. He had four sons and four daughters, and I know of at least four cousins who all had that Egram Briton first name: one Egram Briton Hanekom, one Egram Briton Gibbons and no fewer than two Egram Briton Lightfoots! There are several Egram Britons in Naairs and I was hoping to complete my family tree with missing information and possibly even connect with descendants that are still alive. Egram Briton was the brother of my direct ancestor and the name can be traced back as far as 1781 when the first son of Francis Britain and Elizabeth Egram was given this name. It is such a strange and special name, there must be people here that know or have known people with this name! Thanks in advance! Thanks Sonia, I am happy that it has been useful to you. It sure is very interesting history! The JONKER Stamouer summary is a great overview, however for those keen to know a more detail, the Familia 2-2015 article will be well worth getting. It can be ordered from eGGSA or will be received free upon joining as a member - see http://www.eggsa.org/FAQ-membership.htm#goodies - it is great value for money. Regards, Martina Louw. Dear Albie I unfortunately do not know if any of the other Government Archives Home Affairs records have been data processed. Some of the document series - e.g Estate Papers- are data processed by all Government Archives - but regarding other documents series each Archive do their own prioritisation. Kind regards Daniel Ps I was an archivist in the Cape Archives in the late 80's/early 90's and have some knowledge of this. Have also assisted with the data processing of some of the records. The series I have worked on that made the biggest impression on me was Estate Papers for the First World War period. All those young men. Many of them with virtually no assets. Sometimes their last "pay check" still due been their biggest asset. I can remember that some of them died at Dellville Wood. I am happy to announce that an in-depth article written by myself and fellow genealogist Jaco Strauss about the (previously) controversial origins of the South African JONKER progenitor has just been published in the GGSA publication Familia [52] 2015-2. We believe the debate around Adolph Jonker's origins has now been settled once and for all by the facts presented in this article. We spent a lot of time and effort doing rigorous documentary research, we also analysed the DNA profiles of two separate lines of descent from Adolph Jonker and came to the following conclusions: . Adolph Jonker was of Indonesian descent in his paternal line . Adolph Jonker was the son of free slaves Jonker van Makassar and Rosetta van Java . Jonker van Makassar was not the same person as the so-called Prince of Ternate, as previously alleged. An English summary of our article is available on the Stamouers website at http://www.stamouers.com/index.php/stamouers/surnames-h-to-j/231-jonker-adol ph Kind regards, Martina Louw.
