    3. Hi Dave,   I see that you're researching the name HUNTER in SA, presumably from Scottish roots...   I have  a Scottish/South African ancestor called SARAH ELIZABETH JAMIESON HUNTER, & would be very interested to hear from you (or anyone else) if these names sound familiar.   Many thanks,   Heather.   From: Dave Long <dave.long@telkomsa.net> To: SOUTH-AFRICA@rootsweb.com Sent: Tuesday, 24 May 2011, 18:53 Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA] Scottish Place Names in the Free State Many Scots helped build the Main Rail Line from Port Natal to the Reef in the late 1800's. The Natal Govt Railways, for whom most of them worked, also built a branch line from Ladysmith into the Free State. This may explain why there are some farms or places with distinctly Scottish names in that province. Two farms that are of interest to me are Stratherrick and Glen Urquhart. I have exhausted the Internet and am now hoping that someone who has one of those old SA Place Name books could please do a look up to see if there is any mention. Alternatively, someone may just know who gave these two farms their names and if there is any history available? I realise that a trace of the property transfers records at the Deeds Office is also a solution. However, I am not based in the province (and it is usually a very time consuming process).  Regards Dave Long, Cape Town Researching: LONG, MURPHY, GRANT, BRAITHWAITE, HUNTER ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTH-AFRICA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    3. Hi Dave I have just recently read an email on the SAR Mailing list from the now retired historian who handed a perfectly good and well referenced SAR history archieve over to to Transnet that the whole archive is now a total shambles without any filing system and documents scattered all over the place. No budget is allocated and no one cares particulary, so history is likely to end up on a dump somewhere. :o( SAR history will become history in a much sadder sense! If anyone has managed to contact them in recent months, please let us know. 3. Here is the information [Directory page for Bizana 1913 sent off list] I have about Mr. J.W. Marais, solicitor in Bizana, Pondoland from 1914 onward. I would have to go back to check if he is mentioned in any earlier diaries, but he certainly is not mentioned in any of the Directories that I have, before 1914. One, quite dramatic mention, is in 1917 when there was a terrible accident on the Umtamvuna River when the Resident Magistrate [J.C. Hargreaves] , his brother, and a Mr. Jeans/Geans were drowned, and Mr.Marais was the only survivor. This is written up in the book History of the Wild Coast by Clive Dennison. I have 57 diaries in total to transcribe, and am only up to 1927 right now. They end in 1957. So there may be more comments about Mr. Marais in other years. I have no idea of his age i.e. birth place or date. Does this help? Veronica in Canada

They were skilled carpenters who moved into London and assisted with its housing development and expansion around Clapham, Balham then Lewisham. I know of one who escaped to Canada where three of his children still live. Also an uncle of mine also emigrated to South Africa but his descendants are now in the USA. 1. Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA] People mentioned in the 1914 Diary of Dr G.BThompson of Bizana

    3. To clarify, Bizana is a small village in Pondoland. These days a road runs from between Kokstad and Flagstaff to Port Edward (in Natal) through Bizana, crossing the Mitchell Bridge. The Camp I referred to was an army [CMR=Cape Mounted Rifles) or SAMR (South African Mounted Rifles)] or Police camp close to the village, established to keep order among the various tribes and to control the border with Natal when the Cape and Natal were still separate colonies. Dr.G.B. Thompson was the District Surgeon in Bizana from 1899 until mandatory retirement age. He stayed in Bizana and continued his practice until near his death in 1959. He was greatly involved in church affairs (all denominations) all his life and his work kept him involved with people medical, clerical and judicial in Kokstad, too, as he was required to attend and give evidence at Circuit Court at least once a year. 3. I have at last received the said Death certificate: It proves to be the correct one. So: After more than 6 years of searching I have at last found more information about my father's first wife. I was thrown by the fact that she lived in South Africa for many years. I then noticed on Find My Past that she travelled back and forth several times. She obviously did not advise the Hayes Court Care Home, where she died, of the full name of her divorced husband or the fact that he was still alive at the time of her being there. The Croydon Register Office have now been advised of the corrections. The date of birth narrows down the possible Elsie May Rogers to - Q3 1898, Cannock, Vol. 6b, Page 518. But the problem is that none born at that time have the name Frederick (a Baker) as a father, per her marriage certificate! I will eventual trace all the 'travelling to' addresses in the UK on the Electoral Rolls to see if any other family emerge. To some extent it is all a pointless exercise, just a need to know, because if she had not run off in a huff - for what ever reason - then I would not be writing this to you here and now! Jim Death cert reads: Death Entry No. 273. Registration district Croydon. Sub-district Croydon London Borough of Croydon. 10 April 1983, 50 Hayes Lane, Kenley.
