Hi All, I have been asked to help a friend of mine to research the ASHBURNER family and have discovered that his grandfather Harry John ASHBURNER was married to a Rosina HARRISON who I think could be the person listed below as having an estate file in the Cape Archives: DEPOT KAB SOURCE MOOC TYPE LEER VOLUME_NO 6/9/22771 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 3758/54 PART 1 DESCRIPTION ALPER, ROSINA ELLEN. NEE HARRISON. ESTATE PAPERS. STARTING 19540000 ENDING 19540000 I cannot find an estate file for Harry John ASHBURNER and perhaps this estate file, although it doesn't mention the name ASHBURNER, may provide more clues. Any assistance greatly appreciated. -- Regards, Con Mercer
Hi, I would imagine it must be the local administrations who keep them up, because the Commonwealth War Graves Commission only commemorate the dead of the two world wars. >From the CWGC site: "The Commission only commemorates those who have died during the designated war years in service or of causes attributable to service. The war years are considered to be World War I 4 August 1914 to 31 August 1921 World War II 3 September 1939 to 31 December 1947" So whoever is doing it, all thanks to them. I am sure I read somewhere that the War Graves Commission put a lot of effort into tracking down graves on outlying farms etc and re-interring the remains in centralised locations where the memorials could be tended in perpetuity instead of being at the mercy of changing landowners. Perhaps the politics of the time had something to do with it, not only changing from USA to RSA but many of the colonies were seeking to throw off British administration. The war graves I have visited elsewhere in Africa have all been in the local cemetery, not out in the bush where the soldier died and was probably first buried. Economics probably also comes into it, it would surely be much cheaper to pay the local council than to try to maintain graves scattered over a wide area. Whatever the reasons for bringing the graves together it must be said that they are remarkably well maintained, and the cemeteries where you find them are also above the local average - presumably the War Graves Commission makes regular checks and this helps to keep up standards! I wonder whether the transcription is exactly accurate: there are three errors in the above paragraph (one in the first line and the others two successive words in the third line). Mind you, if the transcription is correct, it wouldn't surprise me -- I've seen worse in Woltemade, including one on my mother-in-law's stone, which my brother-in-law didn't pick up and have corrected, along with an incorrect date (or perhaps his writing was insufficiently legible and he couldn't insist). This was done by a monumental mason right opposite the cemetery who must get a lot of business ("position, position, position!") and who should have known better, but these days printers, once the best proof-readers, don't know better either. Hi all Picked up a copy ( as i do!! ) of The Union Trades Directory for 1953/54 the other day. It lists businesses in operation at that time. It is a huge tome and covers towns and villages in the Union of South Africa and South west Africa as well as Northern and Southern Rhodesia, Central and east African Territories!! 480pages! If anyone would like lookups please holler. Please give me the name and relevant town or village to check in as to search through the whole book would be a marathon!! The book gives the population of the various towns as well for anyone who is interested. Kind regards Nikki No virus found in this outgoing message. I came across the following listing: Philip, P (Peter?) and Ploeger, J: "Supplementa ad Familia", Parts 1, 2, 3, staple bound paperback, 1979, 1985, 1986. Does anyone know what these are? Did GSSA have printed supplements to Familia? Keith
SA Genealogies 3 p. 246 says he was from Arnhem. That would be his birthplace. Trysie, Thank you for that! It is interesting that at the height of anti-British sentiment (ZA was about to vote to leave the Commonwealth) such a monument was erected. Morning all I was just wondering if any of you have come across a Mary Anne (Molly) Hunter * c1834 in George +1889 at Uniondale South Africa. She got married in 1856 at George and had 4 sons. Unfortunately no other info on this lady. Around 1600 the English started "planting" a lot of Scottish (mainly Protestant farmers) in the Northern part of what was Ireland at the time. This was to keep a foothold on the island but also to redevelop that part of the country (which had been ravaged by centuries of battles starting with the Vikings). I have encountered many Scottish sounding names in Northern Ireland. People from there were referred to as the Irish-Scots or Ulster-Scots. Various events (e.g. The Great Famine in Ireland, 1845-1849) led to tens of thousands emigrating to the US and other English Speaking countries. South Africa only received a trickle compared to the US, OZ and surprisingly a high percentage went to England. Around 1922, Ireland split into two countries, namely, Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. I have not come across a SARAH ELIZABETH JAMIESON HUNTER. I did try the NAAIRS Database which gave a few Elizabeth Hunters and Sarah Hunters. Also tried searching for any records containing Jameson Hunter to no avail. Any info about places and timelines may help. I have a Scottish/South African ancestor called SARAH ELIZABETH JAMIESON HUNTER, & would be very interested to hear from you (or anyone else) if these names sound familiar.
