I have been subscribing to Ancestry 24 for a few years now and find it very useful but the site was updated and I now find it very difficult to navigate around.Inspite of this, Heather has done a fantastic job and we must give credit where due I have bought death notices from Ancestor.co.za which are very reasonably priced and Nicola who deals with these is very helpful and I have exchanged some delightful emails with her,she has an interest in other peoples research and one does not feel they are "wasting" her time.Just one tip...be patient..as sometimes one can wait about three months for one`s order, but you will receive it eventually. Both sites have there uses and so I shall continue to use them. Good luck to all in their researching Cate On 12 July 2011 10:53, Colin Möhr <mohr@lantic.net> wrote: > Dear Margo, > Are you sure of your facts? > Ancestry24 is the greatest thing since sliced bread and the Channel Manager > Heather MacAlister is an extremely knowledgeable and capable professional > genealogist who is dedicated to the cause! > The other website mentioned is merely a marketing ploy to get poor > gullible > people to pay exhorbitant fees to get copies of documents already listed in > NAAIRS and has no other merit or depth of information. > Colin Mohr. > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "mkennedy" <margoken@bigpond.net.au> > To: <SOUTH-AFRICA@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Tuesday, July 12, 2011 9:59 AM > Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA] Ancestor.co.za <http://ancestor.co.za/> or > Ancestry24 ?? > > > >I have recently had contact with both of these Websites, and would like to > > offer a little warning as to which one to try first. > > > > > > > > I acted very quickly when I finally found a name I've been looking for > > over > > the past 7 years, and paid to join Ancestry.24 so I could > > > > access further information, but no viewing of original records for my > > particular people were available. > > > > > > > > I then found the other website, ancestor.co.za .. which I found to be a > > lot > > more user friendly. Thank you to Lynn and John for information about Leonard and Mary Violet Gray and a source for Durban marriages. I will continue searching for the Puckle connection. Jean
I believe the Durban Family History Centre have a complete data base of Natal marriages. It might even be on the Familysearch website by now. Protea Boekhuis, Stellenbosch has five copies of "Die van Zyl Familie in Suid Afrika" for R50 each. This is a slim volume on the European origins, it contains little ZA genealogy. Quagga Books, Stellenbosch has a very good copy of "British Residents at the Cape", and also a copy of Malherbe's "Drie Honderd Jaar Nasiebou". I highly recommend both of them. Keith

Hi Folks, Idlely looking for information on my great grandfather I stumbled across the British House of Commons Papers on Google Books. This includes land grants to various people (all listed) in Natal in 1848-1850, (Volume 37). Lots of names that may be of interest, certainly to me, 2 of my 3gt grandfathers are listed. Other finds on Google Books include the Kenyan Gazette which includes the voting lists of 1925. 1926 and 1927. Have a look. Best Wishes, Dorri
Along the same lines, I would like to find out details of my grandmother's and grandfather's marriage. Thomas Foley and Lilian Adams. They had 3 daughters in SA. Ellen in 1905, Lilian in 1907, and Kathleen in 1909. They immigrated through Ellis Island, October 5, 1911. Thanks to all, Brian Foley In a message dated 7/14/2011 9:17:28 A.M. Hello Colin, I had an email from Heather MacAlister with reference to my comments, and have sent her a reply, which you will find below, which I hope you will find self explanatory. In all honesty, it was not the money that I was concerned about - rather the amount of information I was able to obtain from ancestor.co.za, and finding it was not available on Ancestry.24 - so I would hardly call myself a poor gullible customer. At this point in time, I have nothing to compare with, and am hopeful that Heather and I can figure out why I have been unable to access the same records that I found elsewhere - if not for my own benefit, then for anybody else who may have similar problems. I appreciate your concern and support for Ancestry.24, and look forward to an early resolution. Hi Heather, Firstly, my apologies for stirring up such a hornets nest. Please let me try to explain In one of my recent emails to you, I sent a copy of an original record to you that I obtained from ancestor.co.za a Death Notice for Leo Cyril Benjamin Slee see attached. This record, as well as Estate, Inventory & Will Documents were delivered to me also, totalling up to 18 pages, for what I consider a reasonable cost. Over the past two weeks or so since our last communication, and in light of what you reported with some of your records not being fully accessible I have continued trying to access the records, which I assume are the same ones from ancestor.co.za without any results. There are only a certain amount of Slees in the records, and the only two related to me are William Richard Slee and Leo Cyril Benjamin Slee. William Slees wife, Ellen Heap has a sister, Annie Heap who married Thomas McCraw, and they also migrated to SA from Victoria, Australia, around the same time, so anything pertaining to them and family is also of interest to me. All of which I obtained from the other site amounting to around 16-18 pages each. It has been disappointing to find that to date, I have been unable to access the same records through your site, as I expected to, having paid for the subscription. Unfortunately, every time I tried to access these particular people, and after I had signed in, there was still only the basic information, with a view this record option, which then tells me that the requested record is premium content, and advising me to subscribe, which I had already done. I would be happy to send you everything I have on one of my people to see if its possible to access the same records through Ancestry.24 a test if you like, to prove your point as Im sure this whole thing has been just as frustrating for you as it has been for me, and although I thank you for the refund of my subscription, I really would like to see the problem sorted out, in which case, my apologies will be made to those who have defended Ancestry.24. I would like nothing more than to have full access to as much information as possible, and admire and respect anyone that takes on the task of supplying family research records, for the benefit of family researchers. It would be really nice to sort this out, as I do not like to think that I said/done the wrong thing by people/groups, etc., especially when those involved are only doing their best to help others. Sincerely, Margo Kennedy
I have recently had contact with both of these Websites, and would like to offer a little warning as to which one to try first. I acted very quickly when I finally found a name I've been looking for over the past 7 years, and paid to join Ancestry.24 so I could access further information, but no viewing of original records for my particular people were available. I then found the other website, ancestor.co.za .. which I found to be a lot more user friendly. It not only contained the same basic records as Ancestry.24, but I was able to access all records required by applying online, paying the fee, and receiving the records online via notification by email that they are available. When I questioned Ancestry 24 as to why I could not view the original records, I could not get a straight answer, and have now accepted the fact that my money has been wasted with them. If I had found ancestor.co.za first, I would not have had this hassle. It appears that ancestor.co.za has much more to offer on their website, and would recommend you try them first. Good luck, and happy digging, Margo

Hallo :-) I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you. Maybe it depends on where your interest is? I haven't had any bad experience with Ancestry. And found, and still finds, Ancestry24 very useful for my research in South Africa. Good luck, and happy digging, Margo ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to SOUTH-AFRICA-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
