    1. Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA] AFRIKAANS GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH MANUAL FOR FREE
    2. Keith Meintjes
    3. Daniel, Thank you! This is an incredible resource. Would you be receptive to a project to translate your Manual into English, or even other languages? (Dutch, German, ...) I imagine we could get a group of volunteers to do the translation. Perhaps, under the aegis of eGGSA? Or, Ancestry24? In this day of Google Translate, the main requirement is a person who can be a good editor and coordinator. Daniel, thank you again. I am fortunate in that my Afrikaans reading skills have not withered, because of my interest in genealogy. (I have lived in the USA since 1975.) Best wishes, Keith ------ Original Message ------ Received: Sun, 28 Aug 2011 02:42:15 PM EDT From: Daniel Jacobs <danielmalanjacobs@gmail.com> To: south-africa-eastern-cape@rootsweb.comCc: south-africa@rootsweb.com Subject: [SOUTH-AFRICA] AFRIKAANS GENEALOGICAL RESEARCH MANUAL FOR FREE Dear Friends If you understand Afrikaans you may be interested in downloading the 2010 version of my Genealogical Research Manual for beginners for free at http://www.gendata.co.za/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=13&Itemid=28 The contents are: *HOOFSTUK 1* *Inleiding -13* *HOOFSTUK 2* *Waarom doen ons navorsing? – 17* *HOOFSTUK 3* *Waar begin ons? – 22* *HOOFSTUK 4* *Familiewapens – 24* *HOOFSTUK 5* *Insameling en ordening van inligting en bronneverwysings - 1. [SOUTH-AFRICA] Wesleyan Minister Obituaries No 4 John WILSON (1820-1891)
    2. Darryl Allwright
    3. Hi Listers Obituary of Rev. John WILSON John WILSON (B), who was born in London about the year 1820, and died at Cala, South Africa, July 1891. His parents were devoted Christians and true Methodists, connected with City Road Chapel. His mother dedicated him to the Lord from his earliest infancy. When about sixteen years of age he was converted to God, and some four years later he offered himself as a candidate for the ministry, and was accepted by the Conference and sent to the Theological Institution, first at Abney Park and then at Richmond. After completing a three years' course of study he sailed for South Africa, where he arrived in 1845, his first appointment being at Graham's Town, where he remained for three years. He subsequently laboured in the Circuits of King William's Town, Bathurst and Fort Beaufort (twice), Port Elizabeth, Cradock, Somerset East and Graaff-Reinet. In all these places he and his devoted Christian wife were greatly esteemed and beloved, and their influence and work were productive of much good. In the year 1884 he became a Supernumerary, and shortly afterwards took up his resident at Cala, where he did good service Christ and Methodism, and won the esteem and love of the people. For the last two or three years his health declined, so that he was unable to visit the country parts of the Circuit, but he continued to conduct the services in Cala to the last. His death was sudden. On the Sunday previous he preached twice, and the following two days visited some of the people. The next day he appeared in his usual health, but soon after retiring for the night he passed away without a struggle, his dying word being "Jesus". He was a man of a bright and genial disposition, full of kindness and sympathy. His character as Christian was most exemplary, whilst as a Minister, he was devoted and faithful, a diligent pastor, a useful preacher, whose aim was ever to be doing good. 1. [SOUTH-AFRICA] Wesleyan Minister Obituaries No 3 Timothy CRESSWELL
    2. Darryl Allwright
    3. Hi Listers Obituary of Timothy CRESSWELL Timothy CRESSWELL, who was born at Radford near Nottingham in 1829. He feared the Lord from his youth, and began to preach before he was twenty years of age. In 1859, he was accepted as a Candidate for the Ministry, and sent to this country, in several circuits of which he laboured with much acceptance. In the year 1881 he visited England, but returned in the following year. A cart accident which occurred several years ago caused him much suffering, and resulted in life-long lameness, sometimes painful. But tribulation worked patience, and by his patient resignation the grace of God was magnified. His character was transparent, his disposition eminently amiable, his preaching simple and instructive. The last five and a half years of his life were spent as a Supernumeracy at Jagersfontein in the Orange Free State, and here he entered peacefully into rest on the 4th October 1889, in the sixtieth year of his age, and the thirty-first of his ministry. All you need to do is to decide on an easy to remember short cut of say 2 letters that do not make a known word or abbreviation, such as zx, and using the auto correct feature say that when every you type zx word must replace it (automatically, as you type) with the control character equivalent. Joy ----- Original Message ----- From: Johann Hanekom To: south-africa@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, August 18, 2011 10:06 AM Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA] symbols in SA genealogies (Sonia van Heerden) Hi Sonia On a laptop you will find a number of keys with numbers on them, such as on U, I, O, P, etc To type Alt-number combinations, you need to depress and hold the blue Fn key (bottom left of your keyboard), together with the Alt key, and then type the number using the numbered keys shown on the various letter keys. Much easier to put the symbols in a text file, though, from which you can easily copy and paste when needed... Johann Message: 1 Date: Wed, 17 Aug 2011 12:34:59 -0400 From: Sonia van Heerden <soniavh11@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA] symbols in SA genealogies To: <south-africa@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <BLU160-W21BA7C46900D21F3EC38B5AB280@phx.gbl> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Hi Keith Thanks for the advice. I will try translating a short article from Dutch as well as Afrikaans to see how it will turn out. Some of the translations were weird. I had one article with a woman names Catherina, and the Afrikaans translation changed her name to Margarita in every case. In another article there was the word Nederlands, and the translation programme changed the word to Canada, perhaps because it sees I am in Canada. Unfortunately with my laptop, because I do not have a numeric keypad, the Alt numbers do not work, with the numberic lock on or off, but I did find the character map and have used that to add the symbols in my text. Thanks again. Sonia Message: 5 Date: Mon, 15 Aug 2011 19:14:44 -0400 From: "Keith Meintjes" <umfundi@usa.net> Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA] symbols in SA genealogies To: <south-africa@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <322PHoXNS2816S03.1313450084@web03.cms.usa.net> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Sonia, When using Google translate, try Dutch => English as well as Afrikaans => English. For symbols, it is somewhat a matter of trial and error. In Word, try Insert ... Symbol and see if the symbol you want is in the table that is displayed. Otherwise, do a Google search on ASCII Code for some sort of explanation. To get an ASCII (or extended ASCII) symbol, hold down the ALT key and then type the 3 or 4 digit code on the numeric key pad. Release the ALT key, and voila! Baptised (wavy equal): 247 Died (dagger): 0134 Divorced (divide): 0247 Euro: 0128 British pound: 163 You can also find a vast number of Unicode symbols. To enter a Unicode symbol, type the 4-digit number. Then, highlight (select) the number, and type ALT+X. For instance, 2248 is the baptised symbol. There is also a way to type HTML characters, but we won't go there! 3. A much, much easier (GRIN) way, is to use MS Word's "Auto Correct" feature ! All you need to do is to decide on an easy to remember short cut of say 2 letters that do not make a known word or abbreviation, such as zx, and using the auto correct feature say that when every you type zx word must replace it (automatically, as you type) with the control character equivalent. Much easier to put the symbols in a text file, though, from which you can easily copy and paste when needed... 3. Joy, Yes. As a variation, when you go to Insert ... Symbol in MS Word, you can assign a "Shortcut" key. So, for example, you can assign Alt+(Dollar sign) to be the Euro symbol. Other likely assignments might be Alt+(plus) to be died (dagger), and Alt+(equals) to be baptised (wavy equals). These assignments are specific to you as a user on a particular computer. They are saved in your Word template file.
