    3. Hi Michele, many thanks for the fast response. I found the ROGU newsletters on the 'net when I Googled Gill's name. That's how I discovered that she had taught there. I did try emailing a contact address some while ago but got no response. Have a look on the Website : http://www.rgjs.co.za/ROGU/main.htm The Rustenburg Old Girls Union Newsletters are done by Mary Rose Berrisford She can be reached on mberrisford@xsinet.co.za But be warned - nothing happens in a hurry - I get relies up to 2 weeks later. The ROGU itself uses this email address : rogu2000@hotmail.com and the response there is not much better. There is no telephone number for the Old Girls Union. Its possible the school might be more helpful. I don't belong to the ROGU myself, so I can't do much better myself Maybe someone on the forum has better contacts in this regard Regards Michele

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA] Bernardo children
    2. Sonia van Heerden
    3. Yes, children were also sent to Canada in a Bernardo scheme. They were also called Home Children in Canada. There were a number of schemes where children were sent here - particularly to work on farms. Some had good stories and some had very hard times. There have been researches done here in Canada and in England about the ancestry of these children. I know that the Bernardo organization has good records of these children. You might try to find out whether the organization still has records of where the children came from and what happened to their families. Sonia

    3. This is a great blight on the Australian Government and churches between 1945 and the early 1970's. The Catholic and Anglican churches had the orphanages and were the biggest offenders. I do not know about children in Australia being fostered in private homes. A film has recently been released 'Oranges and Sunshine' the story of a Social worker who reunited thousands of children with there parents who were told they were orphans and sent to Australia for presumably 'Oranges and Sunshine' but instead they got cruelty. In Australia there are many people suing the different church groups for the mal treatment of them as children. It appears this happened all over the Commonwealth countries. In Australia > there are many people suing the different church groups for the mal treatment > of them as children. It appears this happened all over the Commonwealth > countries. Lynette from OZ I have a book called "Kingsley Fairbridge, by himself" Kingsley Fairbridge was born in the Eastern Cape in the 19th century, and trekked with his family to Mashonaland (now eastern Zimbabwe) where he grew up. He had a fairly tough life on the farm, doing a lot of farm work, but he also enjoyed his childhood, the outdoor life, and thought it was healthy. He went to study in England, and was shocked by the conditions in which the children of the urban poor lived, and so he proposed, developed and promoted "child emigration" schemes, with a vision for establishing farms throughout the British Empire where children could have a healthy outdoor childhood such as he had had. His ideas were marked by idealism, altruism, imperialism and, to some extent, racism. He wanted to increase the white English-speaking population of the "Empire". I believe he actually established one or more farms in Western Australia. His idea was that children should grow up in a clean environment, and especially with clean air and sunshine, that they should work on the farms and grow their own food, as he had done as a boy. So the scheme would be self- financing, and the children would learn useful skills and become farmers. What he didn't foresee was the difficulty of finding people who shared his vision to actually run the farms. Many of the people who did that were anything but suitable, saw it as just a job, and the children in their care as just cheap labour to be exploited. So the vision and the reality rarely matched. But the movement he was instrumental in starting lasted about 70-80 years. It ended partly because people realised that it wasn't working, but also because in the 1960s Britain had largely recovered from the urban poverty of two world wars, and, with the independence of many former colonies, imperialism as an idea and ideology was fading, and came to be regarded as quaint and old-fashioned. But it was a farm boy from the Eastern Cape who started the whole thing. -- Steve Hayes E-mail: shayes@dunelm.org.uk Web: http://hayesstw.tumblr.com/ (follow me on Tumblr) Blog: http://khanya.wordpress.com Phone: 083-342-3563 or 012-333-6727 Fax: 086-548-2525

    3. Dear Pat, There was a time in UK when the Children's Society thought Children weren't being looked after by their Parents properly. They took the Children away and sent them to Australia, South Africa and I think Canada. Also the Barney Benito Homes for Children. I have read on the list and somewhere else that these boys in S.A. were not always treated well, had to attend Church on Sundays and looked after the sheep or cattle, had to wash their own clothes and got scraps to eat eventually they were in tatters but had something near decent to wear on Sundays so people would think the were well looked after .Also they were checked occasionally by the Children's Friends Society. but the children were dressed properly for the occasion and had to answer their questions in front of their owners and so weren't always truthful out of fear of beatings and no food. They mainly looked that the child had grown it didn't matter that they had got thinner. 1. [SOUTH-AFRICA] Wesleyan Minister Obituaries No 10 William Clifford HOLDEN
    2. Darryl Allwright
    3. Hi All Obituary of William Clifford HOLDEN William Clifford HOLDEN, who spent more than 60 years in the Wesleyan Ministry. He was a native of Derbyshire, England, and whilst a youth sought and found the Lord. His conversion was clear, and he lived in the daily consciousness of the Lord's abiding presence. He was in due time accepted for the Methodist Ministry. After three years' service in England he came out to the Cape Colony in the year 1839, and early manifested those charataristics which marked his career. He was untiring in his industry;and, by unintermitting application, he made himself familiar with the History and Customs of the Mative Races, and his work in the Kafir Tribes has taken its place as a standard authority. He was faithful in the discharge of his duties as a minister, carrying the gospel of Christ into new spheres, which at a later date became prosperous Methodist Churches. He was the Pioneer of Methodism in Natal. He was a diligent student of Scriptures, and his sermons were marked by evangelical fervour and spiritual power. He was an active pastor, and numbers living on solitary and remote farms were as carefully visited as residents in towns. During the years of his retirement, he was still diligent; and, up to the time of his last illness, which was of brief duration, he was one of the chaplains of the Cronic Sick Hospital, Graham's Town, devoting most of his time to the spiritual well-being of its inmates. He passed peacefully and triumphantly away, on the 14th of October, 1897, in the eighty-fourth year of his age and the sixty-first of his ministry. From; Minutes of Sixteenth Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of South Africa, 1898 Transcribed by Darryl Allwright P O Box 166 Grahamstown 6140 Cell: 076-091-2764
