Hi David, Here is a link to a search of the South African Archives (NAAIRS) for George Webster - http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300ds?201110010853151B0E7686&PN=00000001 As you will see, there were many people with this name, but I could not find a George Tyson Webster. Hello David, There is a pretty good Anglican Archive in Pietermaritzburg with records from most of their churches in Natal. Also search NAAIRS (National Archive Index) to see if there is an Estate File. My great grandfather b. 10 Apr 1855 In Westmorland England, named George Tyson Webster. He left his family in Lancashire and went to South Africa, date not known, he returned at some time due to some illness. He again returned to South Africa, and was said to have been told by a doctor that if he returned it would cause his death. He is shown with his family in 1891 census but not in 1901 or 1911. Thanks to a message on another Rootsweb list listing of the eggsa.org site I did a search on the cemetery listings and found a George Webster who's burial in 1938 was at Urban area Kwazulu-Natal, MOOI RIVER, St John's Anglican Church cemetery. I was recently quite shocked to discover that someone I regarded as an experienced genealogist did not use the "to-do list" feature of his genealogical software as a research tool. So I've written a blog post about it, and about how useful it is. If you have a genealogy program with a "to-do list" feature, and you haven't used it yet, you can read about it here: http://su.pr/9a3X53 -- Steve Hayes E-mail: shayes@dunelm.org.uk Web: http://hayesstw.tumblr.com/ (follow me on Tumblr) Blog: http://khanya.wordpress.com Phone: 083-342-3563 or 012-333-6727 Fax: 086-548-2525
Hi Obituary of James THOMPSON, M.A. James THOMPSON,M.A., born in Ireland, December 16th, 1843. He decided for Christ before he was sixteen years of age, and immediately commenced working for God as a Sunday School Teacher, being soon after appointed as Class Leader, and accepted as a Local Preacher. In 1865 he entered the Ministry and laboured for seventeen years in his own country, and among his own people. At the Dublin University he took the Degree of Bachelor of Arts, with honours, gaining a Moderatorship in Literature and Philosophy. Subsequently he took the Degree of Master of Arts in the same University. He came to South Africa in 1882. With unusual power and acceptance he fulfilled the duties of his Ministry in the Queenstown, Capetown and Kimberley Circuits. He was a refined, eloquent speaker, and possessed very markedly the pen of a ready-writer. For five years in Ireland he was Editor of the "Christian Advocate," and his contributions to current literature were extensive and valuable. As a man he was affable, winsome and affectionate, attracting to himself a large circle of friends who were charmed and benefitted by their intercourse with him; as a preacher he was clear, chaste and instructive; as a Superintendent he was diligent, capable and faithful; as a pastor he was kind and sympathetic; and as a colleague and brother Minister he was beloved and trusted. He held a prominent position in the South African Church, serving the Conference for several years as one of its Secretaries, and his wisdom, experience, and counsels were exceedingly valuable. He compiled at the request of the Conference a Manual of the Laws and Discipline of the Church, a publication which reflected his accuracy in and wonderful capacity for work. He was twice President of the Conference, fulfilling the duties of the office with rare ability and success, while as Chairman of the Cape of Good Hope and Kimberley Districts he displayed to advantage those remarkable gifts of administration which he possessed. At the Yearly Conference of 1892 he ably represented the South African Conference. He took an interest, and exercised an influence in public matters, and especially in educational affairs. He was from the year 1891 a member of the Council of the Cape University, and served with great usefulness and efficiency on the Kimberley School Board. The hand of God was laid upon him in affliction early in the year 1898. He was able to continue his work at intervals until March, 1899, and became a Supernumerary at the last Conference. He continued in weariness and suffering until the end came. During his illness he manifested beautiful Christian patience and was kept in quietness and peace, sustained and comforted by the abiding grace of God. He entered into rest at Kimberley, November 13th, 1899, in the fifty-seventh year of his age and the thirty-fifth year of his ministry. Hi Obituary of Edwin GEDYE Edwin GEDYE, who was born in Devonport on the 4th December, 1835. He was converted in early life, and began to preach at eighteen. He entered the Ministry in 1857, and was one of a devoted band of young men who were sent to South Africa by our Missionary Society at the close of the year 1857. His first appointment was to our Mission at the Transkei, where he laboured for many years. He soon obtained a mastery over the Kafir language, preaching in it with much acceptance. His thorough knowledge of the language and customs of the Native tribes proved of great value to our Church during his long career. After a lengthened period of service in Kafirland he came to the Colony for the sake of the education of his children, and was stationed at Peddie. After twenty years service he visited England, and on his return was appointed to Port Elizabeth and Cradock. He then returned to Peddie, where he commenced a Training Institution for Girls, in which work he was ably assisted by his devoted wife. In 1892 another trip to Europe became necessary on account of disease contracted during arduous labours. The course of medical treatment, together with rest and change, benefited him greatly, so that on his return he was able to resume work, and was stationed at Mount Coke, and afterwards at Lesseyton, at which place he had charge of the Theological Institution for the training of Native candidates for our Ministry, and with Mrs. GEDYE superintended the Training Institution for Native Girls, in both departments rendering very valuable service. Here he died in harness after over forty years of faithful and devoted labours. Mr GEDYE was a man of remarkable energy and resource. He never seemed tired of work. Whenever he was stationed he set about some fresh enterprise, and many visible results are to be found in the different Circuits where he laboured. He was a good man and a devoted Missionary, his one aim being to glorify God and benefit those who were under his charge. The end came somewhat suddenly, though his health had been declining for years, and on Sunday, the 25th June, 1899, he passed away to his reward. I was at school in NEWCASTLE, Natal where the senior female teacher had been a MRS. RUSSELL. She in fact was called " ma" Russell by all the girls who absolutely feared her. She taught TYPING and ENGLISH in those years (1960 to 1966) and possibly thereafter, perhaps not for too long as she was then already close to retirement I would think. She had a son called Jamie (obviously James ) who was good at diving. Perhaps her husband links to the Durban RUSSELL'S. Unfortunately there are no Russell's in my family tree, so that concludes my contribution. greetings Kobus Farrell

Hi All It has been a while Obituary of William TYSON William TYSON, born in the county of Cumberland, 1st Nov., 1823. Much of his earlier life was spent in the Isle of Man, where he was truly converted to God, and where he was pressed into the service of the Church, preaching his first sermon when about 18 years of age. He offered for the Ministry in 1846, and was at once sent to the island of Jamaica where he laboured with great acceptance for about 16 years. Returning to England in 1862, he spent 11 years in several important Circuits in the northern countries. In 1870 he was sent to South Africa by the Missionary Committee, upon the invitation of the Grahamstown Circuit, where he laboured for five years, his other South African Circuits being Kingwilliamstown and East London. In 1884 he was ordered home for medical treatment, and in that year he was the Representative of the South African Conference at the Yearly Conference. Recovering health, he was asked by the Missionary Committee to take charge of the Honduras District, whither he went in 1885. As Chairman of that District he was very successful in carrying out a policy of extention. Brought close to the gates of death by an attack of yellow fever in 1890, he was compelled to return to England and retire in 1891 from the active work of the Ministry, after a period of 45 years faithful and successful Service. As a colleque Mr. TYSON was considerate, kind and loyal; his piety was a robust and manly type; he loved all things good and beautiful, and was highly esteemed for his personal character. He never "whiled away time," he was conscientious in the discharge of his pastoral duties, was an insatiable and extensive reader, a vigorous thinker, taking special interest in natural and moral philosophy. He was an able theologian, his preaching was mainly expository, and his sermons were thoughtful and edifying. His "Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans" testify to his diligent and constant study of the Scriptures. The years of his retirement were spent in South Africa, during which he rendered valuable service as an occasional preacher in several Circuits. The last year of his life was one of quite waiting until "the weary wheels of life stood still." He passed away on May 5th, 1898, in the 75th year of his age, and the 53nd of his Ministry.
