SA Genealogies 14 (VALCK) says Cataharina was the second child of Cornelis Valck and Catharina Fredericks, both from Amsterdam. I am also interested in the ethnicity of Catharina VALK, born ca 1620, married July 26, 1739, to Johann Horn in Cape Province and died Oct. 9, 1759 at the Cape. Her first marriage was to Carl Dietrich BOETENDAG (Buitendag). Her 2nd husband Johann HORN arrived in SA in 1735 and was a burger in 1739. I presume she may have been of German ethnicity, but am not sure. Has anyone any more information on her? Sonia
I want to again look at the ethnic background of my husband's van Heerden family, and have come up with some persons whose ethnicity is unknown. I know there was some controversy about the De Beer family. In my records I show that they could be from Land of Waas in Germany or the Island of Riigen, Denmark. Does anyone have any more information on the origin of the De Beer Family. Sonia
Leaving a book for the years to come is simple. Send (as you must do) 2 copies to the National Library, Send others to the Society of Genealogists in LOndon, GSSA, and any other sort of repository you know of. Books endure, our electronic stuff changes so rapidly and becomes obsolete within 20 years that it is undependable I think. Great to get it done though. And one to Lincolnshire? My grandfather came from there too. And I have sent his story to their County Archives. Hello, <<< Can anyone tell me more on Clarissa Meek who m:28-09-1853 William James Dunbar Moodie. I suspect she might be related to other Meeks that went to Greytown RSA. I wonder if she is related to Elizabeth Meek of Enfield, England who m:26-11-1858 to James Frederick Markham ?. >>> I have just answered my own question, something I have wondered about for a long time: John Joseph Meek + Clarissa Cutbush had about 6 adopted children it seems. Two of these children were Clarissa Meek b:26-01-1836 + Elizabeth Meek b:26-01-1836. Not only are Clarissa + Elizabeth Meek sisters, they are twins !!!. In my records I already Elizabeth Meek's b. date as b:26-01-1836. Elizabeth Meek m. James Frederick Markham, my line, their one son Frederick Edmund Markham m. Elsie Elizabeth Moodie. This also should mean that this Clarissa Meek b:26-01-1836 must be the same person who has eluded many (???) it seems so far, who m:28-09-1853 to William James Dunbar Moodie, Esq. J.P. (b:13-11-1827 at Port Francis, Cape Colony, South Africa). In fact James Frederick Markham had a dg named Clarissa Mary Markham. This is a most interesting link to be found for me. It would explain why James F. Markham and 3 of his sons went to Rhodesia having closeness to the Moodie family, his wife's sister married a Moodie !!!. I think is the first time this link has been established.... - S.K.M. - [!!!] =======================
