Archives contracted The Document Warehouse to store their files during renovation. This was done at a site in Cato Ridge. All those estate files are now back in Pmb Archives. Later files held by the Masters Office will not be released to Archives in future. I am told it's because 1) Confidentiality reasons: 2) Archives don't have the space. Some while back I heard through the grapevine that The Masters Office were looking to establish their own separate Archive. Heard nothing since. On my previous visit there, in 2001, there had been no problems, but in 2008 there were queues stretching outside the building. Good Morning all, from a very wet Cape Town, My g-g-gfather August Hermann GEBHARDT came out on the first immigrant ship from Hamburg. I understand from comments on the Lists that the agent who was then transporting these settlers, Godeffroy and Sons, was declared insolvent many years ago and that their records are possibly stored in Hamburg. Would any Lister know if this is true and if copies of the actual contracts signed by the individual settlers actually exist either in Hamburg, Cape Town Archives or possibly in a UK Archives? I am trying to trace a copy of the contract signed by my g-g-gfather. Any assistance would be appreciated, as I am sure aother researchers would also like to find theirs. Hi Keith Thank you for the link to the MASETI indexes, which I think could prove invaluable to researchers. I have had a brief look at Pietermaritzburg which have been (partly) captured from 1994 to 2008 and Cape Town from 1951 to 2008. The latter will be very handy as Deceased Estate file numbers are currently only available on the National Archives website up to 1950 (I think). It will be necessary to know the persons first name as the MASETI index is sorted on first name in alphabetical order, in about 50 files. I have already managed to find the Estate number of a relation who died in 1982 which would have been difficult without these indexes. The challenge now is to view its contents! (I live in Durban) Your comments re the lack of service at the Cape Town Master's office tends to holds true for most Government offices in South Africa these days! Obviously Mrs Le Roux has left as she used to be very efficient, knowledgeable and helpful. Hello: From the small bit I have looked at elsewhere, many people from Germany went to England, stayed there until they got their new papers, i.e., became 'British' again, and then left either London or Southampton to South Africa. There are a lot of William Smiths or W.F. Smiths coming out. What year was he born about ?. BS. === send me your gggrandfather's name and approximate date of birth or age when he left Germany. I can check the Hamburg departures and see if I can find him. My gggranfather name was William Frederick Smith. ===
God knows where this thread started, it was not on this list. I really do wish that people should adopt the best practice of sending queries separately to one list at a time. Transcribed from CO53/18 at the National Archives in Kew, London Thursday 4 July 1844 A Dutch farmer by the name of J. DE LANGE was, we regret to state, wounded by Kafirs under the following circumstances:- It appears that he, with some other farmers, were tracing the spoor of stolen cattle on Monday last. On coming to a deep kloof they perceived the cattle at a distance at the bottom of it, and as they were descending a Kafir fired at DE LANGE and wounded him severely – the ball, we are told, passing through the left arm, entering his left side, and coming out at his back. Other Kafirs were seen in the bush close to the cattle, upon whom the farmers instantly fired, and shot, it is said, three of them. The cattle were then abandoned by the farmers, who assisted in conveying their wounded companion home, a distance of 4 miles. The Kafirs, it appears, must have fled immediately on receiving the fire of the farmers, as all the cattle were discovered on the following morning. Assistant-Surgeon FRAZER was promptly dispatched to the assistance of the sufferer – and by the last accounts, we are glad to say, that the wound, though severe, was not expected to prove mortal. Another Dutch farmer named Hermanus LOMBARD was also wounded by Kafirs with an assegai in the hand, on the 29th ult. He was looking for some oxen on his own farm, on the Koonap, when he was suddenly attacked by some Kafirs – by one of whom he was wounded as stated above. Lt. ARMSTRONG, commanding the Mancazana Post, has been out patrolling during the whole of the week, spooring stolen cattle, - and patroles have been sent from Graham’s Town and Fort Brown, to scour the country in all directions.
