Hi Richard This could be the deceased estate file of George in 1951: http://www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm30ddf0?201401192024478E4F 8C63&DN=00000001 If so a researcher would be able to look at the Death Notice on the file and give you family information from it. Hi there Please could someone tell me how I can get a copy of a Death Certificate for a death that occurred in Standerton, Tvl in 1901. I have found a record for James Frost who died there on the 26/11/1901 in the Standerton Concentration Camp. The only ones available online at Family Search are for the Cape Province. Thank you Patty

Hello Richard, Once again many thanks , the possibility looks good that one of them is the George I am looking for. I have found the NAAIRS site very useful. I will contact one of the independent researchers to see what they can obtain copy documents for me. Hello Richard, Thank you for your informative reply. I will definitely investigate the links you gave me. Yes I did obtain the information on baptisms from Familysearch records at the link below. Unfortunately they are restricted to Baptisms only but there is still a lot of information on this site I still need to explore. https://familysearch.org/search/image/index#uri=https%3A%2F%2Ffamilysearch.org%2Frecords%2Fwaypoint%2FM9HS-L38%3A885917874%3Fcc%3D1468076 Once again thank you for your response. regards Ken Taylor [email protected] On 14/01/2014, at 10:18 pm, Richard Ball <[email protected]> wrote: > Hello Ken, > > you wrote: > > KT> I am trying to find information on my great Grandfather, George > KT> Taylor who lived in Fraserburg, Karoo, Northern Cape. > KT> I have not been able to trace his death and do not know whether > KT> he stayed in Fraserburg when he retired. > > The following Estate File is indexed on NAAIRS: > > http://www.national.archives.gov.za/naairs.htm > > TAB MHG 5013/49 TAYLOR, EDWARD WILLIAM. 1949 > PREDECEASED SPOUSE ELIZABETH ANNE TAYLOR. > > This may (or may not) be your grandfather. Hello Ken, KT> Yes I did obtain the information on baptisms from Familysearch KT> records at the link below. Unfortunately they are restricted to KT> Baptisms only but there is still a lot of information on this site KT> I still need to explore. Sorry, I misunderstood (or didn't read properly!) part of your original query. George Taylor - had a good job - let us assume he stayed in the Cape, then, up to 1920, there seem to be these possibilities (from NAAIRS) MOOC 6/9/373 522 TAYLOR, GEORGE. DEATH NOTICE. 1898 MOOC 13/1/861 76 TAYLOR, GEORGE. LIQUIDATION AND DISTRIBUTION ACCOUNT. 1899 MOOC 6/9/472 1290 TAYLOR, GEORGE THOMAS. DEATH NOTICE. 1903 MOOC 13/1/1144 12 TAYLOR, GEORGE THOMAS. LIQUIDATION AND DISTRIBUTION ACCOUNT. 1903 MOOC 6/9/748 997 TAYLOR, GEORGE. DEATH NOTICE. 1914 MOOC 13/1/2259 174 TAYLOR, GEORGE. LIQUIDATION AND DISTRIBUTION ACCOUNT. 1914 Since George Taylor is not an uncommon name on NAAIRS it may well be that none of these is your great grandfather. The George Thomas could be your grandfather's brother - if so, and he wasn't married when he died, his parents, if living, would have been joint heirs with his siblings and should be mentioned in his death notice and in the distribution account - might give you a clue if they were still living at that date. The above docs are all in the Cape Archives and eGGSA can't help you there, but there is a list of commercial researchers on the NAAIRS web site: http://www.national.archives.gov.za/NARS%20DMLIB%208372%20March%202012.pdf All the best, Richard -- Richard Ball, Norfolk, England http://www.ballfamilyrecords.co.uk [email protected]
Hi, I am trying to find information on my great Grandfather, George Taylor who lived in Fraserburg, Karoo, Northern Cape. From the Fraserburg parish records (Parish of Beaufort-West division Fraserburg) I have found George and his wife Elizabeth had four children. 1. George Thomas Taylor born 20/12/1880 - Occupation of George - Gaoler 2. Henry Frederick Taylor born 4/12/1882 - Occupation of George - Gaoler 3. Amelia Catherine Mary-Ann born 26/10/1884 - Occupation of George - Chief Constable 4. Edward William Taylor - my grandfather - born 2/12/1886 - Occupation of George - Chief Constable. I have not been able to trace his death and do not know whether he stayed in Fraserburg when he retired. Also I do not know if he was born in South Africa or came out from the UK - my Dad thought his ancestors may have come from Reading England but my aunt thought they came from Ireland. Any suggestions or advice on where to look would very much be appreciated. Kind regards Ken Taylor New Zealand

Hello all With the listowner's permission I would like to announce a brand new version of Robert Shell's "From Diaspora to Diorama: The old slave lodge in Cape Town". Rob writes: "One purpose of this e-book is to encourage a change in the way history is researched, read and written. For too long history has been written by trained historians employed by universities and funded by large granting institutions. Such history is often of such a demanding and esoteric nature that the subjects of the history do not recognise themselves. Consequently, such books are neither read nor sold in the subject communities. Such books are also expensive. The people are therefore cheated of their own past and, ultimately, of their identity. In this production, I want to bring to the reader both the primary and secondary material of one topic, the old slave lodge in Cape Town. From Diaspora to Diorama contains over 9,000 pages of interpretations, newly unearthed eyewitness accounts, newly commissioned aquarelles by John English and many new sketches and photographs by internationally famous model builder, Peter Laponder." Of exceptional interest to the genealogist or historian are the appendices of 6,000 entries: slaves, political exiles, slave voyages to the Lodge, slave cargo lists, lodge slave baptisms, lodge censuses, slave lodge deaths and lodge manumissions. It is curious that the Lodge slaves are often better documented than the settlers! A number of well-known researchers contributed to this publication, resulting in a well-rounded and well-researched product. It is available both as a CD-based item or as a downloadable. A 56-page brochure for this item can be downloaded from http://www.cdbooks-r-us.com/supportdocs/diasporabooklet.pdf More details are available on the www.cdbooks-r-us.com website. Any queries should be addressed to me directly at above address and not via the list. Kind regards Colin
My sister has asked me for my help. our Uncle died at Frangipani Nursing home in Bera. Durban. South Africa, years ago, believe his wife also died there, they were Charles Campbell and Betty Campbell, he was originally from Northern Ireland.. went to South Africa, came over to London when I was living at home a few times.. so hardly saw them, my late mothers brother, similar as my Auntie, mother sister, she was in Nairobi with her husband.. sad when families leave home and hardly ever seen again.. but the Nairobi ones did retire to England, but years later, nieces left home for New Zealand!!! Wonder if my Auntie and Uncle in Durban have headstones on the plots. I would guess they died about 1970-80s in S. Africa.. When I quote Northern Ireland, he was from Whitehead, lovely area, often had school holidays there, as he had his sister and a brother still living nearby. Charles left a family bible, wouldn't I love to find that treasure, they belonged to the Presbyterian church, so perhaps they have the Bible, it may list some family history which I need!!! I know at one time they lived in Jo'Burg.. Any guide for searching for anything on this family would be wonderful thanks, neither of the family in South or East Africa had issue. Adele Carterton. NZ

Hi Adele Your quest is going to be difficult! Frangipani Nursing Home, Essenwood Road, on the Durban Berea, closed down some years ago. I pass by often but am not sure what is there now. I will look in the next few days. Whether the previous owner is still alive and still has records is anyone's guess. The only way to try to trace your aunt & uncle would be to establish their dates of decease. If they had assets there will be a Deceased Estate file which will be lodged at the Master of the High Court's offices in Pietermaritzburg. If the deaths were after 1973 the only way to obtain the file reference is for someone to physically search the annual Index books at the Master's office. This will be time consuming. Once the Deceased Estate file is located it will indicate who the Executor was and he/she/they will be able to indicate what happened to the family Bible. Adrian Kloof, nr.
