Did you know him too? For those interested, there were 5 Anglican parishes in the old eastern suburbs of Johannesburg. St Michael & St George in Bez Valley -- down in the valley and the lowest of the low St Andrew's Kensignton - halfway up the hill, and moderate to low St Patrick's, Malvern - over the hill, and moderately high St John's, Belgravia - highest geographically and generally high church St Mary-the-Less, Jeppe - not quite as high geographically, but the highest of the high ecclesiastically. They were all within about 3 miles of each other, so people living in the old eastern suburbs might go to any of them depending as much on ecclesiastical taste as geographical proximity. And the trams to all of them passed pretty close to St Mary's Jeppe. So if you're looking for an elusive baptism or marriage and don't find it in one parish, you might find it in one of the others. About 50 years ago the Rector of Bez Valley was the Revd Jim Sexby. The other clergy in the area called him "Mr By" because they thought it safer to leave sex out of it. Those on the other side of the hill were Mr nothing, they were all Father something or other. -- Keep well, Steve Hayes Blog: http://hayesgreene.wordpress.com Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/famhist1.htm E-mail: [email protected]

    3. Hello Steve Just a question about the priest of St. Mary's the Less you knew. Could he have been Father Tom Comber? Lucky I have a book about it, called "Jeppe Jubilee", and once knew a priest who had been the parish priest there (he's dead now). The area around the church has become more commercial/industrial, so not many people living around the church these days -- all moved out to the suburbs. By before 1925 or so the church would have been in the Diocese of Pretoria, the Diocese of Johannesburg was formed about 1924/25, and has been further sub-divided since. -- Steve Hayes E-mail: [email protected] Blog: http://khanya.wordpress.com Web: http://www.khanya.org.za/stevesig.htm Phone: 083-342-3563 or 012-333-6727 Fax: 086-548-2525 ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message --- This email is free from viruses and malware because avast! 3. Hi Everyone, One of my great-aunts is believed to be one of the first children to be Baptised in the church...she was baptised there in 1889. BAPTISM SOLEMNIZED IN ST. MARY'S, JOHANNESBURG IN THE PARISH OF JOHANNESBURG in the DIOCESE OF PRETORIA IN THE YEAR 1889. Date of Baptism: September 23 1889 Christian Names: Susannah Minnie Parents' Names: Herbert Howard BROWNE and Jessie Anne BROWNE Abode: District of Pretoria Occupation: Farmer Sponsors: Maria Susanna Wilhelmina BROWNE (her grandmother) & Jane Simpson HALL, Herbert Howard BROWNE (her grandfather) Ceremony Performed by F.H. Fisker, Assistant Priest, St. Mary's, Johannesburg, Transvaal, South Africa. Copy made 25th September 1889. Perhaps the confusion about whether it was in Pretoria or Johannesburg came about as it's situated in Johannesburg but in the early days of Johannesburg it fell under the Diocese of Pretoria?! Best wishes, Tombi Peck

    3. Further: http://www.blueplaques.co.za/content/st-marys-less-jeppestown http://www.heritageportal.co.za/forum/st-marys-less-jeppestown-0 With regards other info: As you have it [Parish: St. Mary’s Jeppestown Pretoria]: As far as I know, there is no 'Jeppestown' in or near Pretoria. There is the [St. Mary's the Less, Jeppestown] church, on the URLs given, it also shows you exactly where to find it. The church looks closed up most of the time. Jeppestown is at the west end of Jules Street. St. Mary's the Less in Jeppestown, is the oldest church and the second oldest building in Joburg. Address: 39-41 Park Street, Jeppestown. So you not want to be looking immediately in Pretoria any more, it is all happing around Jules Street. [^^^1]: [William Garrity birth: 1884 death: 1885 Chorlton, Lancashire, England]: With regards my post yesterday, to take my own advise, keep in mind here, the DoD is the given value, so the DoB is the calc value. 1885-1=1884. You will need to check the originals to see if it is actually 1 year or 1 month ?. But the census is also the place to go. Also, it was probably William Arthur Garrity name that brought you here. You need to re-access this whole link etc. [Lilian Sampson (Williams) Garrity died on a Sunday at 58 years old]: You can note that the DoD being the 30-07-1950 is in fact a Sunday !!!. With regards another address given: [Sandilane Rd, Malvern East]: This is a typo that should read: Sandilands Rd, Malvern East. Sandilands Rd is just off the east end of Jules Street that becomes a sort of fork, sort of straight into Geldenhuis Rd which becomes Cydonia Rd, which as I have said, will run past the Lilian Sampson Garrity grave at Primrose Cemetery, and the right fork is Stanhope Rd. Past this into Google Maps: Sandilands Road, Malvern East, Germiston, Gauteng search field and press enter. It is one block up parallel to Geldenhuis Rd. I went back to [3 Fourth Street, Malvern, Jhb]. I did a better check. I also checked the back road being David Street which is actually the original entrance for two houses which also have an entrance in 4th Street. So the house I sent you in photo, is in fact No.1, 4th Street !!!. So the house next to it (R) with the green roof is No.3, 4th Street, pritty sure of that. But this truly does NOT seem to resemble either house in the photo you sent me. Are you sure the word is FOURTH, maybe it could be something else ?. It might be we have the correct address, but the photo you have is not No.3, 4th Street, Malvern !!!. Off-list I will send a couple of other grave photos I took, I don't know if they will be of any value, they were near Lilian's grave: Surnames: JENKINS - GREEN. .B.S. ======================

    3. Hello Heather: === <<< I am looking for any info on Lilian Sampson WILLIAMS, .... She married William Arthur GARRITY, he worked in the gold mines and they lived in Malvern East. Lilian Sampson GARRITY (nee WILLIAMS) died in 1950 and is buried in Primrose Cemetery. I am coming to South Africa and will be in Johannesburg for just a couple of days and was hoping someone is able to let me know where the location of the actual grave could be. >>> === For the Primrose Cemetery you need the full DoD for a quicker look up. If you only have the year, you will have go through the entire year's entries. If you are not sure of the year, could be a long wait, and if you have the person's full names and no DoD, it won't help at all. I requested photo from Heather which I got, not a good one, but I noticed the grave behind and noticed its sides, and thought this can't be too difficult to find these two types of headstones close to each other. This graveyard is much bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. Went on my bike, started section by section, going around each section, and to the next section. After about half an hour I was about to go way down to another section area, but then decided to finish one more section on the right. Just as I was about to leave this last section I looked again and saw a black open book headstone, for some reason I had made a mental note that must look for a white one, looked two rows in front, looked different, but there was the other headstone. Went up to the first headstone, and there it was, could also see the other headstone better. Took the photos etc. which have been sent already. To find the grave from the main entrance in Cemetery Rd, come inside and then make your way to about the middle of the grave yard and go all the way right in the direction of the two pylons close to each other which are just outside of the graveyard. Or paste this into Google Maps (In Satellite View) for an approximate location of the grave: -26.193977,28.143075 not an exact co-ord, but the grave will be within metres of this. It is near those trees by the green arrow. Just past the two pylons is Cydonia Rd. Inscriptions: (Left page): IN LOVING MEMORY OF OUR MOTHER LILIAN SAMPSON GARRITY WHO DIED 30TH JULY 1950 (Right page): MOM There were no signs of this being a double grave .... .... .... .B.S. =========================================

So any children could be either THERON or ABRAHAMSE. They also had a son who must have been older-as he is listed first on both death notices and was a major in 1971! Bev

    3. Hello Heather: I have taken liberty to look a bit further for you. I do not know who you know or are in contact with. I will also send details off list. I managed to hit directly onto this family on my first call. You have in your tree one [Charles William Thomas Garrity], and in the local phone book there is one [CWJ Garrity (Charles William John Garrity)] that lived in Alberton. He died roughly 3 years ago. His wife gave me the name and number of CWJG's other son's brother, and the name, number and email address of his dg in England. The dg is interested in this family tree it seems. I got some more info to be sent off list and some comments etc. It does seem to be the right family. =========================== COMMENTS: You need to make sure you connect back into the correct family back in England, otherwise you will get stuck right there forever !!!. I don't see any current ref. to suggest your William Garrity should be named [William Arthur Garrity] ?. There is one ref. I need to go back to just check it. You say the wife of Thomas Garrity Snr. is Elizabeth Anderton. On the ship list it mentions NORS E GARRITY age 31, female, and since the S key is right next to the A key on a keyboard, I suspect the name is NORA E. GARRITY. I suspect the E might be for ELIZABETH, ie, the ELIZABETH ANDERTON you mentioned, or even NORA ELIZABETH ANDERTON ?. *** Since the Norham Castle left 1893, you need to check the 1891 Census to find out where this family is in England etc. !!!. Where is Hulme: Maybe read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hulme : It seems Hulme is now part of Manchester ???. https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Aclara~%20%2Bsurname%3Agarrity%20%2Bbirth_place%3AEngland~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1880-1900~ Louis Garrity chr: 11 July 1890 St Michael, Hulme, Lancashire, England father: Thomas Garrity mother: Elizabeth Anderton Clara Garrity chr: 19 August 1888 Holy Trinity, Hulme (near Manchester), Lancashire, England father: Thomas Garrity mother: Elizabeth [^^^1]: Keep in mind the birth date on ship lists are calculated etc. Also the births [BMD: William GARRITY born March 1885, then a death of William GARRITY, age 1 for March 1885.] is actually Jan-Mar 1885, look at the top of the page for BMD's etc. There seems to be a contingent of Garrity here in the Hulme / Chorlton area, you need to stay here much and sort it out. Keep in mind too, that in many cases other close relatives would also come out to RSA, and that could ??? explain this other William Arthur Garrity also being born in this Hulme / Chorlton area, actually even the same year !!!. https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Awilliam~%20%2Bsurname%3Agarrity%20%2Brecord_country%3AEngland%20%2Brecord_subcountry%3A%22England%2CLancashire%22%20%2Bbirth_place%3AEngland~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1884-1888~%20%2Bfather_givenname%3AThomas~%20%2Bfather_surname%3AGarrity~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3AElizabeth~ But if you to the above URL, you will see still there in Chorlton, is [William A Garrity b:1886 aged 15yrs son] !!!. [Expand the row by clicking the small arrow on the right etc]. Your William Garrity left England in 1893, he can't still be the William A Garrity still in Chorlton etc. in 1901 !!!. Keep in mind the birth years here are automatically calculated from the census date and the age of the person, so this birth year can vary by 1 year !!!. [William A Garrity] is in fact born between Sept-Dec 1885 !!!. https://familysearch.org/search/record/results#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3Awilliam~%20%2Bsurname%3Agarrity%20%2Brecord_country%3AEngland%20%2Brecord_subcountry%3A%22England%2CLancashire%22%20%2Bbirth_place%3AEngland~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1883-1886~%20%2Bfather_surname%3AGarrity~%20%2Bmother_givenname%3AElizabeth~ [^^^1]: [William Garrity birth: 1884 death: 1885 Chorlton, Lancashire, England]: OK, so here THIS William Garrity was b:1884 d:1885, so he died aged 1 yr !!!. So this [William Garrity] is now off the list !!!. === BMD1: William GARRITY born Jan-March 1885. BMD2: Then a death of William GARRITY, age 1 for March 1885. [b:1884 !!!]. BMD3: Then in December 1885 another William Arthur GARRITY both born in Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire England. === So this crosses off for the time being: [BMD2] + [BMD3] !!!. So this leaves us with William Garrity b:Jan-March 1885 !!!. You need to just check that the [BMD2] William Garrity's parents etc., he could have died just before your William Garrity was born ?, and that your William Garrity might have been named after his brother that had just died ?. Simply this should be yours: BMD1: William GARRITY born Jan-March 1885 !!!. Thomas Garrity m.:1882 Manchester, Lancashire, England Elizabeth Anderton. === In 1893 the NORHAM CASTLE departed from Southampton for South Africa. Some passengers were: === NORS E GARRITY AGE 31 [Female !!! Possibly Nora???] THOMAS GARRITY AGE 9 WILLIAM GARRITY AGE 7 CLARA GARRITY AGE 5 LOUIS GARRITY AGE 3 === T GARRITY AGE 32 [DUNBAR CASTLE from LONDON 1893] === BS. =========================== Unfortunately I do not have the full death date. If William GARRITY is not listed does that mean he died without a will?. That is very interesting that there is a William Arthur GARRITY, but his wife's name I am not familiar with. I could probably tell you exactly where the grave is if you can give me the FULL death date. William Arthur Garrity ?.

Thank you so much for the photos, very interesting. Also what a great website, now if William GARRITY is not listed does that mean he died without a will? I know he died young and I would think unexpectedly, in fact he died about three months before his child was born. > > Thank you for spotting my error in the title! Thomas GARRITY is actually William GARRITY'S father (married to Elizabeth ANDERTON - both buried somewhere in Pretoria). William also had an older brother Thomas GARRITY who was married to Fanny Jane (they are actually witnesses on my grandmother's birth certificate). Their is also a sister Clara GARRITY and another brother Louis GARRITY. Unfortunately, I do not have any information on the siblings. > > According to bmd.org.uk there is a William GARRITY born March 1885, then a death of William GARRITY, age 1 for March 1885, then in December 1885 another William Arthur GARRITY both born in Chorlton, Manchester, Lancashire England! I do not have an actual birth date for William so if the estate file has him listed as William GARRITY, then that must be correct. > > That is very interesting that there is a William Arthur GARRITY, but his wife's name I am not familiar with. > > Charles William Thomas GARRITY is one of Lilian Sampson WILLIAMS and William GARRITY's children and he married Elaine BLAIR? > > > Thank you, take care, > Heather > > Sent from my Cream Puff > > > On Jan 22, 2014, at 12:13 PM, "Bart Simon" <[email protected]> wrote: > >> Hello Heather: >> >> I could probably tell you exactly where the grave is if you can give me the >> FULL death date. >> >> [1914: No. 3, Fourth Street, Malvern Johannesburg]: There is no [FOURTH >> STREET] in Malvern. Hi Heather, This Edwin Albert does not belong to "our Coads" but I did get the docs and passed them onto the WW Coad Project as I did with all the others from the NASA. What I am hoping the listing does is opens up the two families. The two family members who I have managed to contact, did help but just with names. There must be some grandchildren of the twins that are still alive as they are around my age!!!!!!! Thank you anyway! 3. The marriage of Charles William Thomas GARRITY to Elaine BLAIR on 3 November 1951 can be seen online here: https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11045-66700-64?cc=2063749&wc=M9 WM-PY9:279261865 -----Original Message----- From: Heather Dickson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: 23 January 2014 04:22 AM To: Bart Simon; [email protected] Subject: Re: [SOUTH-AFRICA] Lilian Sampson WILLIAMS (married name: GARRITY), Thomas GARRITY Hi Bart, Unfortunately I do not have the full death date.
