    3. Dear All, Is there a site where I can find the list of Soldiers killed at the Battle of Hlobane, 28 March 1879 (out side Vryheid)?, I am looking for my gggran, Emma Catherine, formally PHILLIPSON, (nee FERREIRA) second husband STEWART, all I know is that he was killed at the battle of Hlobane, I don't even know his first name. After Mr. Stewart's death, Emma married a Mr Evett SAUNDERS, and lived happily ever after. Regards Andrea Franks

    3. Andrea, Your posts are going through. This is the fourth time you have asked the question! The issue seems to be that Rootsweb no longer sends a notification back to the author. I suggest you Google: Hlobane memorial There is no memorial, and possibly no list of those killed. But, there are some very knowledgeable people who are familiar with the event and the place. 3. Hi there I'm looking for more information on the abovementioned lady. I would imagine that Roye would be her married name. She is a witness to my 2xgreat grandparents marriage in 1876 at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Port Elizabeth. The other witness was a William Barker. Naairs shows an item "Memorials received" Elizabeth Ann Roye. Regarding Husband and another "Memorial Received" Forwarding photograph of husband. I can't seem to find a Death Notice Please if there is anyone out there that has any information on her or her husband, I would be grateful. Sometimes if one cannot find anything on the person that married, the witnesses can also be of help. Thank you Patty

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA] Settler Returns
    2. Sue Mackay via
    3. As promised, I have begun transcribing the final settler returns from CO48/47 at the National Archives in London. They are quite fiddly, so it may take a while to get them all done, but the first ten can now be viewed at http://www.eggsa.org/1820-settlers/index.php/settler-returns The files are alphabetical but not within each letter of the alphabet, and I am doing them in order of the photographs, so Thomas CALTON is next on the list. Charles CAMPBELL won't appear as his party went later (see post 1820 correspondence). These returns are more or less what appears in The Settler Handbook, but there are some differences, as M.D. Nash had access to the returns lodged at the Cape as well. Occasionally extra children appear. Possibly they died before sailing or else stayed behind for some reason. All the best Sue

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA] The price of genealogy books? Way down!
    2. Keith Meintjes via
    3. I am interested to see that many rare genealogy books are much more available and cheaper than they were a few years ago. By the way, the best way to find books like these is www.addall.com/used. Forget about Amazon, e-Bay, and all the rest. Grania Ogilvie: The Dictionary of South African Painters and Sculptors Used to be very rare, never below USD 300. Now, you can still pay a lot of money, but there are a number of copies for less than USD 100. Shelagh Byrne: British Settlers in Natal Used to be unobtainable. Now you can assemble the complete set of seven volumes. Peter Philip: British Residents at the Cape Well, there is a copy in Canada for USD 49. There is another copy in Canada for USD 350!! Jannie and Lalie Malan: The Louws of Louwvliet Almost never obtainable, there is a copy for USD 75. Not that these are cheap, but they are certainly more available than they used to be. The internet has made the market that much more efficient. de Villiers / Pama: Genealogies of Old South African Families (2 volumes, 1964) Only one copy, USD 500. An exception that proves the rule? I bought my set from the Netherlands about 2000, in the early days of internet bookselling, for about USD 100. The start of an addiction. Keith

    1. [SOUTH-AFRICA] George WILSON
    2. Heather Dickson via
    3. Hi On family search there are two marriages in Addington, Durban that I am interested in. 1) Caroline Phelan WILSON b 22 Nov 1853 married 2 Sep 1871 to Alexander WILL in the house of Geo WILSON. On Caroline's death notice it mentions that she was born 'High Seas, British', I am not sure if this literally means she born on board a boat or not - I have been unable to find anything on that as yet. On her death notice it gives her birth date of 22 Nov 1853 so she would have been just 18 years of age but on her marriage cert it states she was full age. 2) Mary Anne Carrick WILSON b 1859 married 16 Sep 1878 to William HOSKISON in the house of George WILSON and one of the witnesses is Alexander WILL. Another witness is Robert WILSON, but I have not yet confirmed how he is related. Since Mary was under the age of 21 she got permission to marry from her parents - George WILSON. I am hoping to pull her records and view her death notice in PMB when I visit SA. So I am assuming Caroline and Mary are sisters and where married in the same house, their father George WILSON in Addington. Why would they marry at a residence verses in a church? I am trying to find out more info on George WILSON. I believe he was leasing property in Addington because from what I have read during that time period it was cheaper to lease property from the crown. So I would image he was British but other than that I do not know anything about him or how/when he arrived in SA. I think his wife was Elizabeth. Thank you so much, Heather Dickson Sent from my Cream Puff

Our church is located at 212 Florida Road, Morningside, Durban. The church is easily accessible, and is situated on the corner of Florida Road and Gordon road. There is ample parking and one can gain access to it through Florida Road. For those who are disabled, facilities are provided. The History of St. Joseph's Parish The parish began in 1852 by Father Sabon, the first parish priest of Durban. He built the fisrt Catholic church placed under the protection of St. Joseph on the corner of West and Grey Street. As the years went by the town's population increased and he began to make plans for a biggger church and it was not until 1881 that work could be started. It was situated on the main thoroughfare of West Street, and the tower could be seen from all parts of the town. Father Sabon, worn out by hard work, died in 1883. In November 1902 arrangements were made for the removal of the entire building, which was to be then rebuilt in Stamford Hill Road. Greyville in 1903 was out in the "country". The foundation of this St. Joseph's parish was laid on New Year's Day 1903, and on the 12th of June 1904, St. Joseph's was opened for Devine Worship. As the years passed Greyville became more industrialised, and residents moved away. New major road developments were taking place in Durban and a new site for St. Joseph's was required. It was then that the site on Florida Road was purchased and in 1975 the parish moved to the new St. Joseph's in Morningside. On the 26th of January 1976, the present St. Joesph's was officially blessed by Archbishop Denis Hurley, OMI. The present church was consecrated by Archbishop (now Cardinal Napier, OFM) on 3rd of October 1993. <http://www.stjoseph.co.za/images/names1.jpg> Click the picture to enlarge>> What are the Mass times?
