She married JAMES PEELER SNELL Abt. 1868, son of ELLIS SNELL and SARAH JUDAH. He was born 05 October 1847, and died 1930 in Buried at Asbury Methodist Church Cemetery, Dale County, Alabama. Notes for SARAH JANE MCLEOD: Sarah Jane must have been something of a character. I have been told a couple of amusing tales about her by two different granddaughters. It seems that one Sunday the preacher was supposed to come to the Snell's for dinner after the church service. Dinner was cooking and everyone went to church except Sarah Jane. When the family returned, they found her just pushing back from the table. When they chided her on not waiting for them and the preacher, she replied, " I was hungry and I ate no more or no less than I would if I had waited so I went ahead and ate." She must have been a praying woman to, and she took it seriously about praying in private. The only problem was that she sometimes prayed in the outdoor "john" and her prayers tended to be rather loud. Everyone could hear her and always knew when she was at her prayers. Notes for JAMES PEELER SNELL: These are some stories that I was told about Peeler. Whether they are true or not, you can be the judge. During the Civil War, there were some Union soldiers in the area and Peeler took some "pot shots" at them. When the soldiers came to the house searching for the sniper, Peeler, it is told, took to the bed with the youngest children. The soldiers came into the house, saw the children in the bed, and took them to be too young to have been the quilty party. Another time-most probably in the Summer of 1863-a Confederate troop came to the house looking for men to enlist. Peeler's mother saw them coming and sent him away to the field. The officer asked Sally Snell if she had any sons of the age to fight at home. Pulling her son, Capus, from behind her, she replied, "this is the oldest son that is here. Are you going to take him?" The soldier told her, "No, we haven't resorted to taking children yet." Now Sally wasn't exactly lying-she had sent Peeler off so he wasn't there. Now Peeler must have been a little upset at not being able to "fight with the big boys". In March 1864, he signed on with the Home Guard in Love Jeter's Company at Skipperville. If he ever saw any action at all, it might have been in December 1864 when Saunders' men raided Skipperville. He was discharged in 1865 and later became a blacksmith at Asbury.
