    3. Family members, I would like to take a few seconds to thank each of those sending inquiries about my graduation...I had a final defense today on my research and do now have the title of Dr. Solomon. All of your prayers and thoughts are appreciated. Perhaps, I can not concentrate on the list and genealogy. Does anyone on the list have the email address for the lady writing a book on the Solomon family? I did receive info from her, but cannot locate her address. Thanks again, Martha Wooten Solomon

    1. Tombstones

    3. Greeting, As you know, I am interested in our discussions only covering genealogy. However, I felt that most of us researching our roots are notorious for tramping through cemeteries, so, I thought this would be of interest to the researchers on our list: "This subject has come up on several lists I am on, about cleaning gravestones and taking pictures of out ancestors graves. So here are some URLs that might help some of you.. And also an explanation explaining some type of rocks used for gravestones. CGN CEMETERY DO'S & DON'TS http://members.aol.com/ctgravenet/dosdonts.htm AGS Do's & Don'ts with Tombstones http://www.berkshire.net/ags/qdatabase.shtml Search cemetery records, do rubbings, clean stones, date the tombstones, taking good pictures of the stones. http://www.angelfire.com/ut/gmachoocho/genealogy.html Clean headstones. These items are too precious to abuse http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~haas/links/cemeterylinks.html I understand that shaving cream is not a good idea, chemicals can damage he stones. I have heard the best way is a small bag of charcoal (not the grill type - but drawing type) and tissue paper. Tape the paper tightly over the stone and pat gently with the charcoal bag, or use colored chalk. To try and clean up stones, mild soap and water are recommended, nothing stronger as it may harm the monument To clean tombstones use styrofoam, old toothbrush and water. How to do tombstone rubbings http://www.firstct.com/fv/t_stn1.html same story different URL http://www.usigs.org/signal/signal/htm *********************************************************** More about tombstones Good evening all; I am Pete Dohms. I am a professional geologist and this topic has landed squarely in an area of which I have some degree of knowledge. >From direct observation and over 30 years of professional experience, I can assure you all that there is some good and bad ways to clean stones, for the purpose of taking pictures, but there are limitations. Allow me to explain. There are several types of "stone" that are typically used for creating tombstones. In the early days of America (particularly in New England), slate was used. Slate is a dark colored rock that breaks naturally along a very strong preferential plane (cleavage). It is also fairly soft and fairly easy to carve. It is also highly resistant to chemical weathering (which is the erosion phenomena Bob was alluding to). Slate tombstones that are hundreds of years old can usually be easily read. In the past 100 years, though, most American tombstones have been created from two other types of rock. Those are marble and "granite." In a moment I'll explain why I put "granite" in quotation marks. First to marble. Marble is a crystallized form of what began as limestone, a chemical precipitate formed as layers in the bottom of a shallow sea. After deep burial, and the application of heat and pressure, the limestone grains (calcium carbonate) flowed together into the larger and more crystallized forms seen in marble. Marble is, like slate, relatively soft and quite easy to carve. It is fairly easy to saw and grind, which is good since it doesn't cleave like slate. If you've ever been to a U.S. Military cemetery, virtually all tombstones you see in the long precise rows are marble. The effect is quite striking. Marble, unfortunately, does not resist chemical weathering at all well. Many tombstones from 100 years ago have become illegible, hence the "tips" that pass around on "how to raise the inscription." In the case of shaving cream, in the absence of affirmative knowledge to the contrary, I imagine the surfactants (wetting agents) in the shaving cream penetrate the microscopic discontinuities along crystal grain boundaries, making those areas easier for rainwater (which in the NE USA is quite acidic) to penetrate. Once penetrated, the acids go to work on the crystal grains, enlarging the discontinuities and exposing new marble (calcium carbonate) to chemical attack. As the process continues, tiny flecks of marble spall off the stone, leaving a white, sugary, irregular surface behind. In cold climates, ice also penetrates into the stone and the freeze-thaw cycle adds physical weathering to the chemical attack (recall that water expands upon freezing, which pushes the cracks open even further). What I called "granite" is, in reality, a trade term for a wide variety of igneous and crystalline metamorphic rocks that contain high concentrations of silica (silicon dioxide, or quartz). The other major components include various feldspars, dark minerals (pyroxenes, hornblendes, micas), and other rock-forming minerals. As a class, "granite" is difficult to work into tombstones. It is both hard and tough. This different mineral composition and more challenging geologic history, however, provides it with an excellent ability to resist chemical weathering. A year ago, Benigne & I found the grave of her grandmother's uncle, who was buried in Northeast Pennsylvania in 1914. Rain in this area is as acidic as any location in the country and more acidic than most. The fine granite tombstone that was described in his Will looked as though it had been erected the week prior to our visit; it was untouched by the 85 years of weather it had experienced. Having said all that, please understand that the forgoing are general statements. There will be specific locations where 200 year old marble tombstones are in remarkable states of preservation, and there will be cases where 200 year old slate tombstones have dissolved to low piles of shaley rubble, but those are exceptions to the general conditions described above. This has gone on long enough, most of you are probably bored by now, and i f anybody has a comment or question, I will be happy to respond "off web" ( or on-web if preferred). Thanks for bearing with this. Pete Dohms, Geologist" Thanks, Martha Wooten Solomon

    3. Would like to correct something. I posted that Sarah Owens was the daughter of John Soloman and Rebecca Sturdivant, well actually she was their granddaughter. Her parents were John Wesley Soloman and Elizabeth Jane Covington. She married a Mr. Owens one of their daughters married Wilson B. Folmar who was the father of James and Montgomery's former Mayor Emory Folmar. But Emory's mother was not an Owens, James's was. So his brother was related the Mayor was not. Here are Rev. and Mrs. Soloman's children Emmett born in Georgia in 1851 he married Mamie Allen in 1875. He died in Houston Texas. Henry Land 1853-1940. Saleman for Teague Hardward in Troy. 3. Good morning , I have newly subscribed to this list on the behalf of a young girl in search of her Paternal family. Jessica Lynn Solomon born Aug 29th ,1981 is trying to connect with her fathers relatives but has little information to start with , she does know her grandfather was Donald Wold Solomon who resided in Souix City , Iowa . She has an uncle Ryan Solomon . Her father William Lynn Solomon was born Souix City about 1957 . He married Darlene Arndt. From this union they had Jessica's brother Theodore Levi George Solomon also born in Souix City and Jessica was born in Lethbridge ,Alberta. Due to circumstances unknown to me she has little contact with her mother who will not supply her with any information regarding her father except to say he died in a prison a year and a half ago.Jessy has some access to a computer at school and her e-mail address is jessiebsimple@hotmail.com if anyone has any information for jessie it would be most appreciated ... anyone may also ! e-mail me direct at tara_p@mars.ark.com and I will be sure to forward any messages on to her. Thankyou everyone Val

I have been searching through the IGI records spelling Soloman in different ways I located a Peter SOLMON from Muiravonside Stirling Scotland he married a Margaret Bryce 5/Sep/1730, so I am not saying that this is Lazarus's grandfather but it could be. My greatgrandmother Oates spelled her name Soloman. Le

    2. Le, I am sorry if you took offense to my post about the correction of the different Peter Solomon's. I did not in any way mean that you didn't know the difference between the two. We covered that problem a long time ago. That information was for some of the new people on the list that has not researched Peter Solomon the father of Lazarus Solomon. I figured they might misunderstand the information you sent. Because it did start out with Peter and Maria Louise Malone Solomon being the parents of Lazarus. I'm glad we have it all settled. Rose

    1. Peter Solomon ???
    2. This is in regards to a post about Peter Solomon, father of Lazarus Solomon: Someone wrote that Peter Solomon and Marie Louise Malone were the parents of Lazarus Solomon. This information must have been posted in error. Because this couldn't be. The father of Lazarus was a Peter Solomon and we do not know the name of Lazarus mother. But the Peter Solomon that is referred to that married Maria Louise Malone was the son of Lazarus and Elizabeth Bedgood Solomon. On her tombstone (which I have photos of) reads "M. Louise Malone, wife of Peter Solomon, Born Apr. 17, 1815, Died May 25, 1888. On Peter's tombstone which is right beside hers (I also have photos of) reads "Peter Solomon, Born Aug 4, 1806, Died Nov. 1st. 1883. Also in the Washington Street Library in Macon, Bibb Co., GA. there is a pamphlet on the Solomon family. It plainly states that this Peter Solomon that married Maria is the son of Lazarus and Elizabeth Bedgood Solomon. Also I have been in contact with several descendants of Peter Solomon and Maria Louise Malone's. The father of Lazarus would have had to have been born about 1736 or 1740. This is according to the birth dates of his children. He would have been a very old man to have been married to Maria. He would have been about seventy-five when she was born. Then he would have been about ninety when she would have been at least fifteen to have married. I'm sure he was a very fine man. But he would have had to have been a miracle worker to have been a father that age and also since Lazarus was born in 1765. That would have had him born before his mother was. Rose Jones

    3. I have recently heard from someone, who knows a relative which might have information on Rev. Soloman's sister Sarah. When I hear something I will share it with the group. One of Sarah's descendants married the father of Montgomery's Mayor. It was the Mayor's father's first wife. So his brother Jim would be related to me, not Emory. Le

    3. I thought I would share this with the group. I was talking to an elderly relative day before yesterday, his mother was one of Rev. Soloman's grandchildren she was born in 1892. He told me Rev. Soloman loved to go fishing, so one day he took his fishing pole and tackle box plus a scale to weigh the fish to a nearby stream in Seale Alabama. So he went down to a near by stream in Seale and began to fish. Someone approached him and told him a member of his congregation was about to have a baby, so he went to visit, they delivered the baby and used his scale to weigh the boy which top the scale at 20lbs. I do not know if that is true but it sure made a wonderful story. It seems that my mother's kin had some type of gene to catch fish, This same relative went fishing with mother's grandpa Oates and they caught 75 to 100 fish on a string, but all I have caught was a head cold. It seems that Rev. Soloman was an amazing person. His house used to be located here in Montgomery off of Carterhill Road. It like most old houses here was probably torn down for progress. > Le > > __________________________________________ NetZero - Defenders of the Free World Get your FREE Internet Access and Email at http://www.netzero.net/download/index.html

    3. I have located this in the International Genealogical Index Records now I have been told by someone on the GENBRIT-L that these records came from English Parish Records which listed Peter Soloman as born in 1734 in England. All of these IGI records we compiled from parish records. I will have to check the original records or what is called the Bishop Transcripts for this information perhaps at the FHC here or in Dothan. Since the FHC here acts like they do not know what they are doing I will contact Pat Long of Dothan. It will mention Baptismal records which could list parents and siblings Parish Records also includes birth, marriage, and death records. I thought I would share this with the group.

    3. Hello All I am sorry if I did not say the information I posted to the group was sent to me by someone. I have mentioned that it did have mistakes in it, but Lydia has not had the chance to correct them. Besides it is my direct line. It does not mention the others in it. Only John and Rebecca's line are listed in detail. We all know that Marie Lousie Malone is Peter the grandson of Peter Sr.'s wife we at this time do not know who Peter Sr.'s wife is. I just wanted to make that clear. So noone else will say that the information is wrong. At the top of the list it should say there are mistakes in it, now I did not list all of them, but some which have come to light recently through further research. According to William Lazarus's Confederate Military Record on file at the State Archives he was alive in 1865, he surrendered with his command as Captain of Joseph Clayton's old Company Co. H., 39th Ala. Inf. Martha' s widow's pensions also says he died in 1870. Which I pointed out. I also mentioned Thomas Carey Soloman and Melinda Ann Oates had three children Maud, Mary Tae, and Ligon Thomas. Also another thing I failed to mention is in Melinda Ann's widow's pension she gave her birth as 5/Feb/1851 not 5/jan/1851. I think I falied to mention that. But the other information is correct. 3. Hello I received this information from Lydia Grimes who graciously consented to let me post this to the group. It deals primarily with my Line. John Soloman. There are some mistakes in it, but it is a start. She married JAMES PEELER SNELL Abt. 1868, son of ELLIS SNELL and SARAH JUDAH. He was born 05 October 1847, and died 1930 in Buried at Asbury Methodist Church Cemetery, Dale County, Alabama. Notes for SARAH JANE MCLEOD: Sarah Jane must have been something of a character. I have been told a couple of amusing tales about her by two different granddaughters. It seems that one Sunday the preacher was supposed to come to the Snell's for dinner after the church service. Dinner was cooking and everyone went to church except Sarah Jane. When the family returned, they found her just pushing back from the table. When they chided her on not waiting for them and the preacher, she replied, " I was hungry and I ate no more or no less than I would if I had waited so I went ahead and ate." She must have been a praying woman to, and she took it seriously about praying in private. The only problem was that she sometimes prayed in the outdoor "john" and her prayers tended to be rather loud. Everyone could hear her and always knew when she was at her prayers. Notes for JAMES PEELER SNELL: These are some stories that I was told about Peeler. Whether they are true or not, you can be the judge. During the Civil War, there were some Union soldiers in the area and Peeler took some "pot shots" at them. When the soldiers came to the house searching for the sniper, Peeler, it is told, took to the bed with the youngest children. The soldiers came into the house, saw the children in the bed, and took them to be too young to have been the quilty party. Another time-most probably in the Summer of 1863-a Confederate troop came to the house looking for men to enlist. Peeler's mother saw them coming and sent him away to the field. The officer asked Sally Snell if she had any sons of the age to fight at home. Pulling her son, Capus, from behind her, she replied, "this is the oldest son that is here. Are you going to take him?" The soldier told her, "No, we haven't resorted to taking children yet." Now Sally wasn't exactly lying-she had sent Peeler off so he wasn't there. Now Peeler must have been a little upset at not being able to "fight with the big boys". In March 1864, he signed on with the Home Guard in Love Jeter's Company at Skipperville. If he ever saw any action at all, it might have been in December 1864 when Saunders' men raided Skipperville. He was discharged in 1865 and later became a blacksmith at Asbury. Children of SARAH MCLEOD and JAMES SNELL are: i. INFANT6 SNELL, b. 15 November 1869; d. 15 November 1869, Buried at Asbury Methodist Church Cemetery, Dale County, Alabama. ii. JAMES A.
