    1. Company C. 15th Conf. Cav.
    2. Hello All Citing General Evans Confederate Military History Vol XII page 298. "THE FIFTEENTH CONFEDERATE CAVALRY. The Fifteenth regiment of Confederate Cavalry was organized early in 1864, at Mobile and was composed of Alabama and Florida Companies which had done coast duty for two or three years. It was placed under the command of Col. Henry Maury, and remained in the vicinity of Mobile and Pensacola the greater part of the year, except when it was sent in the fall to Louisiana and took part in a brilliant fight at Tunica. It served successfully in Jenifer's, Reynolds, Patton's, McCulloch's, and Clanton's brigades in Maury's Army ( Col. Maury's brother General Maury Army of Mobile, who organized Blacks called them Creoles for the Confederate Army. Mobile Creole Guards was one and there were two regiment of infantry and one of Artillery of Creoles inducted into the army). The regiment was described at organization as full, well mounted and well armed; " by December it had lost several hundred, and was reported as poorly clad and scantly fed; but in January 1865, it was recruited from citizens of Mobile and vicinity, armed with miscellaneous weapons, and numbered 1, 200 men. It was 800 strong in the city in February. The companies were almost always on detached duty, watching and checking the advance of the enemy and guarding the approaches to the city of Mobile. In April it was sent to establish a courier line to Demopolis. Before this could be done, the regiment took part in a disastrous fight at Claiborne. It blew up the magazine and evacuated Choctaw Bluff, April 14, 1865. The greater part of the men were disbanded, and the few who remained in arms were paroled at Demopolis.Col Henry Maury was disabled by a wound just before the close of the war. He was detained at Mobile, and the regiment was led at Claiborne by Lieutenant Colonel Myers. Capt.John H.Marshall was wounded and captured at Mississippi City. (CMH Vol.XII page 298, 1899). If anyone is interested in getting Private Solomon's widow's pension email Ken Tilley ktilley@archives.state.al.us. I have requested his service record but have not heard anything yet. The Adjetant General's Office made a mistake they had him down as a member of Company D 2nd Regt. Ala Cav. but when I searched the Roster of Company D. his name was not listed there. Melinda Oates Solomon's Pension stated that he was am member of Company C. Maury's Cavalry, which was the 15th Confederate Cavalry it operated in the vicinity of Mobile and Florida, except for the time it did duty in Louisiana. Melinda's pension did say that he enlisted in 1863 at Mobile. ALso when you email Ken ask him if the National Archives has a National File on Thomas Carey Solomon. They do have one on his brother William Lazarus Solomon Co. H. Joe Johnston's Co. 39th Alabama Infantry. Le

    3. Greetings to all of our members, Recently, I received a message that caused me to see a need to post this message to our group. On both of my lists at Roots Web, I have had problems with messages that are sent to list members, who receive the list format, and not to members, who receive the digest format. This has created extra work, since I have been attempting to ensure that all messages are published in the digest format. Basically, there are two reasons that I am doing this check of messages. First, the digest subscribers will miss some of the posting, if I do not recheck all digests to ensure inclusion of all messages. Secondly, the digest formats are supposed to be archived at Roots Web at some point in the future. The archival files would then be available to researchers, who join the list in the future. I will try to remember to state that the message did not appear in the digest format/publication for the list when I re-post a message. Please, forgive me if I forget to do this. Several times, members of the list or digest have lost their hard drives and requested the addresses of other list members. I have not met these requests and will not give e-mail addresses or home addresses/phone numbers to anyone. I feel that it is my responsibility to protect each member of the list. Recently, on another list I saw where the owner had posted all list members and their personal information. This will NOT happen on this list. To me this is an invasion of privacy. I do not want my e-mail address posted everywhere and I will do not do this with the addresses of our list/digest members. On two occasions, I have forwarded a message to someone on the list from someone else. I did not give out the address and I did explain that the message was being forwarded. The request for the e-mail address was contained in the forwarded message and it was the receiver's choice to respond or not. I hope that everyone understands my position on the protection of addresses of list members. For your information, I also have an unusual password at Roots Web that I do not think anyone could decode. This list has grown beyond my wildest imagination, since I began it in Nov. 1997. I appreciate all of the postings and responses on the list. I would like to suggest that responses to previous postings be made to the list, since your response may help another researcher. Thanks for your participation in the list/digest for our family, Martha Wooten Solomon List Owner

    3. Gena, Have you gone to your local LDS Family History Center to see if there are any listings of records for that particular area listed in the Family History Library Catalog CD? The Library Catalog is an index of books and other records, many derived from parish and civil records from around the world, that can be found in the main Family History Library in Salt Lake City. Many of the books and records have been microfilmed and are available for short-term loan to your local LDS FHC for a small fee, where you can view them. You should be able to find LDS FHCs listed in a White Pages telephone directory under the entry for Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. There is a list of the larger FHCs at http://www.lds.org/en/2_How_Do_I_Begin/4_Where_is.html You might also contact the Jewish Genealogical Society of Philadelphia. Their web site is at http://www.jewishgen.org/jgsp, and ask them for suggestions. Reed Wurts p.s. I have a Solomon family of Monmouth County, New Jersey, that can be found in my Descendants of Jonas Solomon and Hannah Applgate database through the links below. http://pages.prodigy.com/wurts.reed/genehp.htm (Reed's Genealogy Page), location to change before October, but can always be found through a link at http://www.wurts.net > Subject: Re: surname > Date: Wed, 27 Jan 1999 13:47:53 -0800 > From: Gena Crowston <Gena_Crowston@bc.sympatico.ca> > To: SOLOMON-L@rootsweb.com > > Solomon name group, > > I am research the origin of my grandfather's surname--SOLOVAN.
