Hello, This message is being forwarded for one of our researchers: My search is for Saul Solomons who was born in Leipzig, Germany . On his tombstone it says "Saul Solomons, who died on the 1st March 1843 in about the 72nd year of his age. He was born in Leipsic, Germany but upwards of the last 50 years he resided in Colleton and Beaufort Districts (SC) about 45 of which in the latter." Family legend says he was a goldsmith and came to Charleston to work for a Mr. Sinkler. He married Esther Elliott of Beaufort, SC (b.Feb 20, 1780--d. Sept. 21, 1840). Saul is mentioned in "The History of Beaufort, SC" as a Jewish storekeeper and cotton factor. He had a brother in Savannah, Hart Solomons, and a deed suggests a sister named Freelove Solomons Elliott Patterson. Saul and Esther are buried in the Solomons Cemetery in Hampton County, SC. The archives for all of the messages for our list can be found at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl You will need to type in the surname "Solomon" on this screen, then on the next screen that appears enter "Solomon" and select the year you are searching. The list began in Nov. 1997. Perhaps, this will assist you in searching. New list members can also review previous postings to search for their missing links. I would like to request that responses to list inquiries be made to the list, since this facilitates the research of each member of our research group. I appreciate the willingness of each member to share information and see answers to conflicts in dates or other genealogical information. Together we can hopefully find all those missing links. Hello, This is a database at Roots Web that might assist some of our researchers: "ISTG <http://istg.rootsweb.com>. Transcriptions of passenger lists for 404 ships have been uploaded by the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild as of 16 February 1999. Approximately 500 volunteers continue to transcribe lists that will be uploaded as they are completed. Additional volunteer transcribers will be accepted on a quarterly basis (see the ISTG FAQs for details). The passenger lists are searchable by: (1) Date (1600s, 1700s, 1800s, 1900s); (2) Ship's Name (by country, to date including Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Panama, Portugal, Scotland, Spain, Sweden, Venezuela, Wales, and the West Indies); (3) Port of Arrival (to date including Baltimore, Maryland; Canada; Galveston, Texas; Massachusetts; New Orleans, Louisiana; New York, New York; New Zealand; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Port Jackson, NSW, Australia; Virginia; and Wilmington, North Carolina); and (4) Surname and Captain's Name. On the Macon, Bibb Co., GA. Web Page there is a list of Indigent Pensions and it list a W. F. Solomon. Does anyone know which Solomon that is and how is he related to Lazarus Solomon? Thanks, Rose
The following was data taken from an Internet geneology site on February 14th. It was submitted by a family member. No effort has been made to verify the information - it is submitted as taken from the site for informational use only. The X before a childs name indicates more info to follow and presumably is the direct line of descent of the submitter. I have a confirmed list from the office of the Riverside Cemetery of the people that are buried on the Solomon Lot, Riverside Cemetery, Macon, Bibb Co., GA. The lot was bought for $250.00 on 4/13/1888. It is in section named Jasmine and bought by W. G. Solomon. This is the information that the cemetery has. Following is data I have collected on Peter Solomon. All comments, additions and corrections are appreciated. Nieca Sharrard Name: PETER SOLOMON .Birth: 1736/1737 Virginia (SM8) Marriage: Death: Before 1795 (SM5) Burial: Father: * Mother: * Spouse: Residences: Sussex County, VA 1757/58 (SM8); Bute County, NC; Franklin County, NC Occupation: Education: Church: Church of England (SM4) Military: French & Indian War Aug 1757/Feb. 1758, 10th Co. Virginia Regiment, commanded by Capt. Robert McKenzie. Drafted, inducted at Fort Pleasant. (SM8) Cause of Death: Description: 5 4 1/2 dark complexion, black hair, thin (SM8) Deed Records: Bute Cty, NC 1771; Warren Cty, NC 1772, 1775, 1778; Franklin Cty, NC 1785 Children: Lazarus (M) Birth: 1765 Death: Spouse: James (M) Birth: 1770 Virginia Death: Spouse: Comments: Bute County, NC formed 1764 from Granville Co.; abolished in 1779 to form Warren and Franklin Counties. * The parentage of Peter Solomon is uncertain. However, for the following reasons, I feel there is a strong possibility that Peter was the son of Lewis Solomon, Jr. and his wife, Betty Johnson. A bequest was made in the will of Lewis Solomon III, dated 1795, to the children of Peter Solomon, deceased. This would seem to indicate kinship. All other bequests in the will were to Lewis IIIs siblings as he apparently had no children. It appears (no proof) that Lewis may have made a bequest to his deceased brothers family. Betty Johnson had a brother named Peter. Since it was the custom of the time to name children after family members, this could well have been the origin of Peters name. Peter was closely associated with George Solomon, s/o Lewis Solomon, Jr. in the deed records of Franklin County, NC. To have entered into loan and property agreements together would seem to indicate a strong family tie. Peter served as godparent to Mary Solomon, d/o Lewis and Betty Solomon on April 8, 1753. Other godparents listed in the Albemarle Parish records at this time were, as a rule, family members. Peters military records indicate he was born in Virginia. A birth date @1736/37 would have been appropriate to place him as an older child of Lewis and Betty Solomon. William and Ruth Hayes Solomon had a daughter, Judith, born September 2, 1737 which would exclude them as possible parents for Peter (unless Peter and Judith were twins). Here's a different challenge for you fellow Solomon researchers. I came across this typescript: "Chapter XIX; SOLOMON - SALMON" in the Greenville-Green County (Tennessee) Library. I don't know who the people are (yet) nor do I have any idea of the author/compiler. The progenitor in this 12 page document is James Harrison Solomon born 1783, died 5 Feb 1869. He "married (1) Phoebe Trailor, who died Dec. 1815, Halifax Co., Virginia. Children: William and Jerry. Married (2) Dicie Walker ca 1818 in Halifax Co., Va. Children: Bird, Fieldon, Richard, Frank, Tinsley, Susan, Jane, Eliza, Mary and Anna. James Harrison Solomon served in the War of 1812. His second wife Dicie, died at the home of her son, Tinsley Solomon, near Bulls Gap, Tennessee in 1896 at the age of 103 years". The author was descended from James' son William. There is information on later generations and even speculation on James Harrison Solomon's parents. Some of these Solomons lived close to the place and time of my Solomon. Want to take any guesses? Mary
Martha Wooten Solomon wrote: > > Mary, > Is your ancestor, James, the son of Thomas Solomon and Mahalia > Derham? > > Thanks, > Martha Wooten Solomon++++++++++++++++ Martha, I hope your question was directed at me. I don't know who my James Solomon (b. about 1825) is descended from. I do know that he was in Hawkins County, TN in the 1850 census. This record gives his age as 25, POB as TN. The 1860 gives age as 33 and POB is VA. The 1880 census gives age as 57 and POB as VA. He married Emilia/Emily Phillips. They had children (between 1853 & abt 1871) Elbert, Martha, William, Charles, Hattie and Amanda. There were other Solomons(Bird Solomon)in Hawkins County, TN but I haven't come up with any clues to connect them. I copied some Solomon genealogy which I located in the library in Greenville, TN. Unfortunately, the compiler was not identified. It is incidentally headed: "Chapter XIX; SOLOMON - SALMON". If anyone has an idea of the author I'd like to know of it. Appreciate the question! Mary

the web page that was sent the other night was very interesting, But if anyone knows the owner of that page, please tell him that there are indeed Solomon's still in Berrien County Ga, they are all ladies, married and widowed, but still there, and I know this for sure, because they are my Aunts... They're Father was Francis Solomon, son of Matilda.. I am not sure if Matilda was a Solomon by birth or by marriage... but Matilda is listed as his mother @ the time of his death in the 1940's... he is SUPPOSED to be the son of Lazarus, so the family story goes, but I havent been able to find proof of that,{ My grandmother Bertha Malissa <msp> Solomon was named after one of the family, maybe this helps...}I am having one very hard time finding out any information as to whom his father was... and I cant find whom his mother was, I have heard all the Lazarus Solomon, Henry Peter Solomon family mnames all of my life... it's just weird that I cant find a connection, again i am asking for your help if you have any idea where Francis Solomon fits into the picture, I know that he married Mary Brogdon, and that is pretty much it, I have his death record for those of you that may be interested, it's on disc so i can easily send, just Please let me know, I will send anything that I can... I just want to find out who he was.... thank you all... Dee Woods <Charleston SC>
