    3. My thanks to everyone who has responded. It never fails to amaze me how much work members are prepared to do for each other. Researching the Winterfeldt family, especially the grounds for the possible annulment of Hans's marriage, should help me to pass the rest of the winter without the risk of boredom setting in. Just one final question, if I may; how do I go about obtaining a copy of the licence for Helen's second marriage? George

The licence could have been issued by (a) the diocese of London, (b) the archdiocese of Canterbury, (c) the Superintendent Registrar for the district, or (d) the Registrar General. The latter are very unusual. The diocesan records are at the London Metropolitan Archives, and as far as I know they are not indexed for this period, but the date should help locate the licence allegation you want. The archdiocesan ones are at Lambeth Palace Library, and there is a calendar there up to 1913, so locating a licence allegation (if it is there) should be straightforward. I've no idea whether Superintendent Registrars keep records of licences for any period of time. You could try contacting the successor district to Paddington, which is Westminster (contact details: http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/regoff.html#258) http://www.history.ac.uk/gh/marrlic.htm contains some useful information on church licences, but is getting out of date and you should assume anything stated to be at the Guildhall Library is now at LMA.
