    1. [SOG-UK] Another case of a name problem...
    2. I have recently been in contact with a distant cousin, researching the name HESKINS. The contact was made via the Society of Brushmakers' Descendents. A common ancestor is Francis HESKINS, brushmaker, born in Gloucesteshire, where he married Sarah EVANS. The family fortunes rose and declined, with various moves around the country. In 1841 Sarah died in the Saffron Hill area of London. The IGI gives a marriage of Francis to Sarah TEAKELL in February 1842. There is no such marriage listed in the official BMD records. Then I looked at the St Leonards Shoreditch records and somehow found a reference in BMD records to the marriage of Francis 'HESKETH' and Sarah TEAKELL. I ordered this certificate, which arrived this morning. Sure enough the groom's name is clearly HESKINS, son of John HESKINS, butcher. The certificate also tells me that Sarah was a widow, daughter of John ANTILL, a weaver. It would seem that Francis and Sarah probably knew each other because ANTILL and TEAKELL are both name associated with the Horsly/Nailsworth area of Gloucestershire, Francis' home village. To compound the matter, Sarah has given her name as May HESKINS in the 1851 census, when she was living as a widow in Witham, Essex, after the death of Francis. She is recorded as Sarah on her death certificate. Obviously most of the records are correct but sometimes we need to look more closely and more widely to elucidate the truth... Best regards, Janet Heskins
