    2. Catholic marriages were not recognised after the Hardwicke Act, so an Anglican wedding was necessary (until 1837) in order for the children to be accepted as legitimate. It may be of interest that the Catholic church in these circumstances recognised Anglican marriages for Catholics, such as the secret wedding of the future George IV and Mrs Fitzherbert.
