Could anyone advise me if there are searchable on-line indexes for BMD's throughout the UK. I am interested in both England and Scotland? Also where can I find an on-line index regarding names of those who served in the 1st WW? In many cases I am unsure if any charge is made for searching as distinct from obtaining an indexed name etc. The purpose of this enquiry is to assist me helping, at the behest of a Doctor, an extremely ill patient in my local Hospice gaining some knowledge of his family roots. I don't believe you will find both English and Scottish indexes at any one site. English indexes are searchable at http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/ or at http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/index.php , both payment sites. There is a partial English index available for free at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ and mirrored at http://www.ancestry.co.uk/Default.aspx? Scottish records are available, also for a fee, at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/index.aspx I don't think there's any on-line listing of those who served in the 1st WW, the closest will probably be the medal rolls index at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ ; unless the names you're looking for are unusual, or you have other information to help, you may well find that identifying an individual from this source is not easy.
