Thanks Tim and Colin. That surname change has been a 'problem' for decades (or more?) leading to a rift within the family, with some branches adopting the new name and others sticking to the old spelling. At one stage a gravestone was re-cut to remove the new spelling! It looks as if I need to do quite a bit of searching to get to the bottom of the mystery. Ian
