The NY state census IS on ancestry, so if you can use a free library access, this may help you, but I cannot see a way to search by address. You may be able to narrow the district, but the name, though not rare, is no "smith"! Perhaps I am not looking hard enough for an address search. If her arrival was in September 1905 this was after the state census date. This was in June, I believe. As this was a time of massive migration, it may prove hard to find her in one place for 5, let alone ten years. Consider the federal census of 1910 as well as the state census. Her age will be telling here. If very young, she may stay with the family for five years, so finding her may depend on finding others (there are half a dozen with the name in the 1915 census, not all in Manhattan.) A branch of my family went to the states in the late 1890s and did not stay put, even though one worked for a person of significant wealth for some years. Indeed two brothers one way and another crossed the pond several times in a few years sometimes clearly with their respective employers. If you are tracing the person backwards,do you have a naturalisation record? If you do, this should say the first date they arrived. Should! If earlier than the Ellis island record, there may be another earlier one, and possibly another census (but probably not 1905). Also the Ellis island record may have a number written over the persons record at a later date. This may link with later naturalisation (presumably people smuggling themselves in would have a hard time then, as they do now!) Good hunting. She gave her sister's (Mary Davis) address as 255 West 10th Street, NY. Having googled the address, I can see it's in the district of Manhattan but I cannot work out where or how to search. I don't think its possible via "familysearch" and certainly not via "findmypast" (even with their "world" subscription). I've not yet tried Ancestry as I don't have a subscription - can't afford to subscribe to everything (so I tend to use it at the central library). > Any suggestions gratefully received. > > Kind thanks for your time. > > Theresa > > > > > This company (No. 539065) is registered in England and limited by guarantee. > Registered office is at the above address. > > > > Please Note: All quoted prices exclude VAT and are valid for 30 days unless otherwise stated.
