As the new(ish) CEO of findmypast was formerly Director of Digital Media at News International, and Director of New Media for Times Online, I would imagine she's simply making use of her connections to reach a wider market. These sorts of deals can be very profitable, so I wouldn't read it as a sign of desperation.
