    3. Yes, it would be nice to have a list in the 'private' Members section of the website where we could add names of ancestors we are researching, at least put a name to those with similar interests. A number of Family History Societies have Members Interests either open to the public with just an email address, or give membership number to apply to the Registrar for contact, or closed to the public but give name and address/email address. I belong to five FHSs plus the Guild of One-Name Studies all of whom have their own online facility to contact other members regarding Interests in various forms. Most print a list of new members in their Journals and it seems usual that those who require further privacy can either use a P.O. Box number or be contacted via a member of the FHS Committee. 3. I suppose this is Sir Lawrence John Verney, the former Recorder of London, who died 25 July 2014. He is among the new members listed in the March 1941 issue of the Genealogists' Magazine. The novelist Anthony Powell joined in the period 1 July-30 Sept 1926 and died 28 March 2000, so it must be very close between them. Of course there may be someone who has clocked up even longer. 1. [SOG-UK] Burchett(e) Children's Home in Sussex?
    2. Christopher Gray via
    3. Good evening, I have an amateur (rough) transcription of an Adoption Order from the Sussex Petty Sessional Division of Steyning in 1938 where the applicants were stated to be at "Burchett House Brighton Lancing" and the child was an infant at "Burchett Home of Brighton". The order gives the names of the new parents and I have identified them. It also gives the birth name date of birth, mother's name/age. The natural mother was still alive, so we could be talking of a children's home. I also have the Birth Certificate for the adopted child - but have yet to find the original record of the child's birth. I am looking for two things: 1) Confirmation of what Burchett(e) House was 2) Something that would help me identify the infant from the records I have carried out an initial trawl of the Internet - including the on-line index of Kew - but have found no evidence of any such house / home. Can someone please advise me of the way forward? Chris

    3. Merryl I think you are unlikely to get anything very meaningful from these rolls. The key piece of information that you do have is that he served in 2 Welsh. Information about individuals who were not officers rarely made it into official or regimental records in my experience. However you could look on the National Archives website for the war diary of the 2 Welsh. Depending on the diligence of the officer who maintained the diary, usually the adjutant, you could find out some of the day to day activities in which they were involved. The diaries are downloadable at no cost. The regimental museum may also have further information. His full name was John Anderson Stenson Wells but I'd not known which names had been used for his Army records, he was born Basutoland on 10 August but in 1885. I've now found his Medal Card as John S. It does include Roll and Page Number as one 'word', being J/1/104B155299. Would the Medal Roll give me any extra details? 2. <<snipped>> I'm using gmail, ... Clicking "Reply" would get my message to Merryl and Sog-uk: clicking "reply all" would get the message to both of them plus Malcolm. Could different ... email programs also affect the settings at Rootsweb? <<snipped>> The answer seems clearly to be "yes". In my case, Outlook 2003 replies only to the List whether I use Reply or Reply-All. GMail appears to see something extra compared to Outlook 2003, which can't see the original address at all, meaning that Digest mode is totally useless except in responding to the list. Rootsweb should be catering to "everyone" not just some software - I am certainly not handing my mail over to Google (quite aside from the fact that I consider GMail in a browser to be visually appalling - but that's my personal view).
