I think this is one of those areas where the accuracy of the detail recorded seems to be affected by the precise circumstances of the household, and probably the enthusiasm of the enumeraotor as well. I've certainly found one or two examples of relatives recorded as 'visitor' and 'lodger', but I've more often found brother, sister, aunt, uncle, nephew, niece, cousin and even the dreaded 'mother-in-law' ! I've also found a very simple 'relative' and also 'relation', 'adopted daughter' and a few others. I don't actually think 'lodger' or 'servant' were usual terms for family members, unless there was an actual conflict in that the person concerned was both a relative and a lodger or servant and there was a need to choose which term to use. > For the older generation I have also found the phrase 'guest' used rather > than lodger, particularly in cases such as the elderly 'maiden aunt' who > it > seems was accorded greater respect. I'd tend to think of 'guest' as implying someone with greater rights than a lodger, and who was not paying cash for their keep. Occupation could, of course, be related to a different location altogether, but I would agree that an elderly lady described as 'guest' and 'housekeeper' and living with an elderly man, was most likely exactly that. 3. I've definitely had several instances of this - and in my case where it's a rare surname and the individual listed as lodger was not found with his own family in that census, I am quite sure they were actually relatives. It seems (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong!) that unless the person was directly related i.e. son/grandson, daughter/granddaughter, or the phrase son/daughter-in-law which could also mean stepson/daughter, any other relative seems to qualify as 'lodger' (or even servant!). For the older generation I have also found the phrase 'guest' used rather than lodger, particularly in cases such as the elderly 'maiden aunt' who it seems was accorded greater respect. I found at least two instances of such a person who under 'relation to head of household' was described as a guest but under occupation was described as 'housekeeper' and I assumed (possibly wrongly) that the ladies so described were acting as housekeepers to their male relative with whom they lived. 3. There is a Genforum site where you can pose such questions. Very helpful people there. The site operators www.perfiliate.com haven't been able to find the answer for me yet, so I'm wondering if anyone here can tell me. When I go to the site, the images don't all load and there's a message at the bottom of the page telling me that this is because of NIS; this apparently also prevents the commission being tracked. In NIS (Options - Web Content tab) I've tried adding the domain (and another one they mentioned), then under User Settings allowing pop-up ads, but it still doesn't work. The only way I can get rid of the messages and see all the images is to turn off ad blocking altogether, which I prefer not to do. Does anyone know a better way, please? Arthur Kennedy

Thanks to all who offered suggestions - at present, though, changing my internet security software isn't something I want to consider. I realise that NIS has some shortcomings, but as long as I am able to keep it updated - maybe another 2 years? - it's a case of sticking with the devil I know. Meanwhile, I think I've stumbled across the solution by myself, which I am posting here for anyone else who might find it useful. (I am using NIS 2003, with XP Home, SP1.) Under NIS Options click on the Web Content tab. Add www.perfiliate.com to the list of sites in the left hand panel. Highlight this, then adjust the settings under the tabs in the right hand panel: On the User Settings tab I have permitted Pop-up Ads, though I'm not sure if this is necessary. On Ad Blocking I found it was necessary to specifically permit the Perfiliate ads, using the string www.perfiliate.com . Perfiliate also advised me to permit the string b1.perfb.com , but so far that one doesn't seem to have made a difference either way. Under Global Settings there's an option to Block or Permit Information about Visited Sites. I suspect this will need to be set to Permit so that commission can be calculated, but as I haven't actually tried to buy anything yet I haven't tested it. Does anyone know for sure? Regards, Arthur

I too graduated from Norton Anti-virus to Norton Internet Security for my Windows 2000 Professional operating system, only to find that the system slowed down to such an extent it was almost unusable. 3. Check your firewall help file for "referrer checking" or "private header information". Probably somewhere under privacy. Make sure that referrer blocking is OFF or private header information is permitted. I'm only guessing but the sites may well use this to check the route that you took to get there in order to ensure the commission goes to the right organisation. > -----Original Message----- > From: Arthur & Pauline Kennedy [mailto:akpak@waitrose.com] > Sent: 25 August 2005 17:04 > To: SOG-UK-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [SoG] Affiliate shopping site and Norton Internet Security > > Please can anyone help me to configure Norton Internet Security (2003) > so that the SoG affiliate site http://www.buy.at/genealogists works properly? > The site operators www.perfiliate.com haven't been able to find the > answer for me yet, so I'm wondering if anyone here can tell me.

    3. I'm sure we have experts who can advise Arthur and I am not going to be much help, But I had problems with Norton Internet Security 2003, first it didn't seem too happy with service pack 2. I upgraded to NIS 2005. I still found NIS blocked things I wanted, was not easy to configure for a home network. Worse than that it caused my system to slow down, everything took longer. My solution was to uninstall it even though I had time to run on the updates etc. I uninstalled Norton entirely, I switched on the XP firewall and downloaded Avast anti virus which is free. (In reality I downloaded the A/Virus, disconnected my broadband, uninstalled Norton, switched on the XP Firewall, installed the A/Virus, then reconnected broadband) This works for me - I have regained my speed and now have no firewall problems. 3. I have not seen this mentioned so thought some might be interested in this half price sale of practically the entire stock (over 2700 CDs) at Archive CD Books. For details go to: http://www.rod-neep.co.uk/books/new/index.htm The sales include CDs of the images (usually not indexed) of the 1841 census for many counties. These images are probably the best available from the rather poor original microfilms. There are images for the other census years too. Sale ends at 9.00am BST tomorrow Monday . . .
