    3. Comment picked up from the Cheshire List... "I don't think that there is any chance of the 1911 census being released early. See: http://www.british-genealogy.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-4656.html It may be that it is in such poor condition it will never be released at all!" The gist of it appears to be that there are 2 issues with the 1911 census. (1) It consists of original schedules, not enumerators' books, which means that the paper volume is multiplied hugely. This is all there is - it has never been filmed. (2) The conditions it was kept in previously mean that lots of the pages are in poor condition - the original poster says that people who work in the archives at Kew know where the 1911 census is, because, to be frank, it stinks! (I'm willing to be contradicted, but it all seemed very plausible). Rather than build up hopes for 2 January 2012 that simply will not be fulfilled, could SoG lobby for a feasibility study that will identify what, if anything, can be done with it - while still preserving the confidentiality of the data until that date? Yes it can - but it will be harder work. But I am sure you expected that. There is not much you can't do - have a look at ... www.asgz91.dsl.pipex.com/trees-admin/select.html ... if you have a minute or two to spare. 3. Well - definitely TreeDraw - Kith and Kin (excellent program that it is!) is the databse program, while TreeDraw is a more generalised tree drawing program, and as Graham says, will accept GEDCOM 5 input. There is a tailored version of TreeDraw that goes with legacy as well, though I suspect the only real tailoring is in the input side. Hugh Ainsley (one of SpanSoft's beta testers)

If this is no go, some packages will at least allow you to alter the line manually to some form of dotted. I don't believe you will find both English and Scottish indexes at any one site. English indexes are searchable at http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/ or at http://www.thegenealogist.co.uk/index.php , both payment sites. There is a partial English index available for free at http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ and mirrored at http://www.ancestry.co.uk/Default.aspx? Scottish records are available, also for a fee, at http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/index.aspx I don't think there's any on-line listing of those who served in the 1st WW, the closest will probably be the medal rolls index at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline/ ; unless the names you're looking for are unusual, or you have other information to help, you may well find that identifying an individual from this source is not easy. This site is a free index but payment is needed to get at the details, which are of variable use. John B Leic., Eng
