    2. Hello Brian, A comprehensive social history has been written by Christopher Hibbert, "The English - a Social History 1066-1945." My edition was published by Guild Publishing, a book club and does not refer to the original publisher and does not appear to have an ISBN. I suspect that the book will be available in the larger public libraries. Cheers, Janet Heskins (Surbiton, Surrey)

Ths SoG list is run by Rootsweb (see the headers to these mailings) so you have to go to www.rootsweb.com and Remove your old address and Subscribe with your new on. Perhaps I woud do the latter first to make sure it works. A little investigation shows this to be the right place: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Genealogical_Societies/SOG-UK.html -- Tim Powys-Lybbe                                          tim@powys.org              For a miscellany of bygones: http://powys.org

I suspect people who normally use Mac, Unix, Risc OS, etc will be very used to doing exactly that. It is normal practice to open up directories (folders to some) and double lcick on things like PDF files. So the question is whether this is what the user did and if so, what problem did he then have. I regard PDF as a remarkably satsifactory format for exchanging information between all these formats; I use it regularly and have not had anyone have any problem apart from the odd one who did not have a PDF-reader (Acrobat on PCs) program on their machines. > > -----Original Message----- > > From: Peter Abbott [mailto:PeterAbbott.Eymore@btinternet.com] > > Sent: 20 October 2005 14:42 > > To: SOG-UK-L@rootsweb.com > > Subject: [SoG] Creating CDs > > > > > > I produce Cds for our Society and recently received this message. > > > > 'I was very surprised to find that the CD I got from you is for > > Windows PCs only - no Macs, no Linux. Once you have created a PDF file, there is no need to add any other files on any operating system. Mind you it is worth while ensuring that the PDF file you have created conforms to nothing more complicated that Acrobat version 3. -- Tim Powys-Lybbe                                          tim@powys.org              For a miscellany of bygones: http://powys.org

    3. I'm not expert enough to know the absolute details but it will be the tiny autostart files which Windows uses to 'play' the CD automatically when it is inserted. Other Osses need different startup files (I believe), so without these the user will have to dig into their version of the File Manager and manually open/run the data files on the CD. 3. Hi David and others I know you said that you know there are other sources but I will confirm that if you use www.familyhistoryonline.net then you definitely can search the index for 1881 and Lincolnshire. Use FamilyHistoryOnline's free search (yes you do have to register but no personal details, credit card details etc are required) and then use the reference folio/page numbers to go straight to the image on Ancestry. And whilst you are on the FamilyHistoryOnline site try searching for some of your other FH "wants" you may be pleasantly pleased to find something else of interest - remember they have far the greatest amount of burials than anywhere else. 3. After a bit of trial and error it appears that you can add the parish name to the same field - the database finds people with the surname Jaques born in Wroot whether you put "Wroot Lincoln" or "Lincoln Wroot" in the Birthplace Parish field. However, you may find it better to omit the county altogether, as an additional Jaques is found if you just search from Wroot as a birthplace, without the county. 3. Ruth. You are correct! I knew that putting the shortened "Lincoln" into the county field also produced no results but I had not tried putting it into the Parish field. This does then give results for the whole county but there is then no way to further refine down to the parish name. So it is back to switching to the LDS site. Regards. 3. I think it's something to do with the conversion from the LDS data. The 1881, as processed by the LDS, notoriously produced a list of county names omitting the "shire". If you search with "Lincoln*" in the Parish Birthplace rather than County Birthplace field you may find what you're looking for. 3. Has anyone had problems with searching the 1881 Census on the Ancestry site for individuals born in Lincolnshire? I have not been able to get any search results for any surname I have tried with the additional criteria of born Lincolnshire. Searches without the county name specified does show that there are of course rather a lot of individuals that were born in the county. Incidentally, searching without a name but just by the birthplace of "Lincolnshire" produces only 10 names. I have logged two queries about this problem over the last few months and get the reply "under investigation". I am aware of the other sources of the 1881 census but it is usually more convenient to try Ancestry particularly if wanting other census years at the same time. Regards David Tappin
