    3. If you are in doubt of how to access Origins as a member go to http://www.originsnetwork.com/help/popup-aboutbo-sog.htm and follow the advise given please. PS you will have to enable pop-ups for this website. For clarification - only the SoG datasets (indicated by the SoG logo) are included in the Member's 72 hour free access per quarter so keep quiet about any bonus. If you want access to the other datasets please sign up with origins (and the same applies to ancestry.co.uk) from the affiliates link on www.sog.org.uk - you pay the same but SoG gets the affiliate fee. When I tried again, the LDS Viewer *did* in fact install itself, but it was slow to start, to the extent that nothing at all seemed to be happening for some time. Given that XP is generally so much faster than Win95 thatI used before, this was unexpected: I clearly should have had more patience when I tried the first time :(- . I've not yet had a chance to look at this further, but will include these approaches when I do. The basic problem is that XP doesn't recognise that a disc is present, let alone allow it to run. -- Denys Wells

    3. I know it can have problems running under XP - I think it tries to write to areas of the disk that XP would rather you didn't if you're just a bog-standard user. There are 2 ways round this problem - either install it AND run it under an XP session that has Administrator level permissions; or - right click the icon, go to the compatibility tab and check the box to run in Windows 95 mode. The last is by memory since I'm afraid I use option 1 & run my normal XP sessions under an Admin level sign-on. However - not sure from what you say if this is your issue. 3. Good Day, Just had a good read of The Bristol Avon -- a wonderful story of this famous river & canals from beginning to end with countless picture and photos. An ideal book for the historian of this area of Britain. I'm planning to send a couple of copies to cousins in Bristol as "thank you" gifts. I purchased my copy through: http://www.phillimore.co.uk/ I have no commercial interest in the sale of this book but thought some of you would find it interesting. Good Cheer, Edna - Ottawa

    3. As a first step, try the appropriate local historical society/societies. Most have at least a small nucleus of core members who are extremely knowledgeable about certain aspects of their local history, and will doubtless know of similar members of other societies in the district or region who may well welcome the possibility of collaborating with you on this. Good luck - from someone with Lancastrian ancestry! 3. I have been researching my family name [one name study] for the last 20 years and I am now in the process of writing the history of my direct family members all of whom come from West Yorkshire. The book will include, inter alia, four sections 1487-1620; 1620- 1803; 1803-1858 and 1859 to 2005. I am looking for one or more expert social historians who can be commissioned to write a social history covering the first three sections. If not can you suggest where I might look? Many thanks Brian Beanland
