    2. Today's news says that ITV has acquired Friends Reunited (& per an interview with an ITV executive, are gleefully rubbing their hands at the prospect of acquiring this large data base for marketing ITV goods & services). As it was my understanding that Friends Reunited (& their second company Genes Reunited) had recently acquired the 1901 census from the original company who transcribed it, does this then mean that ITV now has Friends Reunited, Genes Reunited & the 1901 census online? Will the users of any or some of these web sites now become targets for ITV marketing? Does anyone have further info on this? Mary

    2. I have had quite a bit of success in finding people in the census on Ancestry by leaving the surname blank, when I have known the birthplace and approximate year of birth of one of the family. It is best to search for family member with the least common first name. Some of the surnames that have come up as a result have had the most unusual spellings that I would never have thought of searching for. I believe that Ancestry have the 1841 census well under way, so hopefully it will not be too long before they have it on-line. Regards Celia

    3. Peter is quite correct in that the 72 hours does NOT include access the the Origins Census material. If you are still getting access then you are one of the lucky ones and I suspect at some time in the future, when and if Origins get themselves sorted out, that you quite likely lose the access. You can of course get access to the full set of Origins material, including the Census, from within the Library. 3. Perhaps you have been particularly unlucky with the 1837 1861 census Mike. I have found plenty of errors in it but have been able to identify my own family. The good thing about 1837 is that they react very quickly if you point out the errors AND they refund the money you pay to see and correct their transcription. I'm a satisfied customer. 3. Go on to the SOG site and enter origins from there and you can get the free 72 hour access. On the SOG site choose <http://www.sog.org.uk/#news4>How to access the Society's data online Then Members should go to <http://www.originsnetwork.com/help/popup-aboutbo-sog.htm>Origins SoG Members help for detailed instructions of how to access the website. I've also had this problem with the IGI, as I mainly use it for looking at big blocks (looking for holes in the wall) this got so up my nose that I shut down and went to have a shout at the snow. Also during Freebdm sessions I get told that we are overloaded and would I kindly leave. (which I do) With Origins I get all set up to really use my free 72 hours and then something gets in between and I then wait for another 3 months. 1837 online.. familyhistory online..ancestrycom and kindred. these are the apples of my eye. 3. 01.00 2.12.2005 In an e-mail receiver by me on 20 November the Genealogy Officer of the SOG wrote some notes including the following :- " There are proposals to add extra information e.g. on death certificates (widows details as well as widowers) and record name changes. GRO says it wants secondary legislation to make minor changes to what is recorded. This might be an opportunity for family historians to request more significant changes such as the addition of dates of births and marriage of parents on a birth certificate, or marriage details on death certificates. " I hold a Scottish Marriage Certificate dated 21 December 1866, and have thought for some how helpful it would be if England and Wales could adopt the Scottish model.. It included not only the names, ages, occupations and marital status, addresses of both parties, but also in addition to the names and occupations of both fathers, the names AND MAIDEN SURNAMES of both mothers.
