The problem is that FH recording is still hooked on recording family groups as husband-wife-child whereas the truth is, now as ever, actually just father-mother-child. Although most programs (and other recording systems) use the term 'marriage' it should really be treated as simply 'child producing relationship'. Your Jane needs to be shown with a (1) and a (2) even though the first was not a marriage (in the legal sense). Whether, for (1), you use '=' or some other symbol is a different debate! 3. I've looked at http://www.beeptwo.com/familyhistory/knightcov.html The indentation is not the problem, just the illegitimacy. It is not unknown for ancestors to have illegitimate children by a series of partners, and I'd have thought the way to deal with it, in your format, would be to treat them as if they were regularly married, i.e. (1) Jane (1851 - 1935) (1) had a child(/children) by Frederick ONGLEY (18xx-18xx) (2) married Alfred COX (1851 - 1914) on dd Mmm 18xx. (1) Alice Jane KNIGHT (1872 - 1962) = William CLAYSON (1870 - 1945) (2) Alfred John COX (1885 - 1954) = Annie Elizabeth WEST (1882 - 1961) Alfred John William COX = Irene FITT Hector Davie

    1. Indented narrative on web pages
    2. Peter COX
    3. Dear All, On my website (see below) I use a form of indented narrative to show couples and their children. As most of my ancestors behaved themselves, or at least got married, this form of presentation is neat and I hope fairly obvious. A problem arises when a couple got married, produced children BUT one of them had an illegitimate child from a previous relationship. For example Jane KNIGHT (1851-1935) had a daughter, Alice Jane KNIGHT (1872-1962) by a Frederick ONGLEY. Jane went on to marry Alfred COX (1851-1914) and have a further child, Alfred John COX (1885-1954). Alice Jane KNIGHT went on to marry William CLAYSON but fortunately they had no children. How is this normally shown using indented narrative? What I have done is on my website - follow KNIGHT of Worth, Sussex Charlwood, Surrey. Hoping for the informed replies such requests as this receive on the SOG List! 3. I have a suggestion for Joan Vinall - why not sponsor the Society getting the parish registers for Cossington. The stages are: 1. The would be sponsor tells the Librarian at the SoG that they could be interested in the idea. 2. The Librarian gets a quotation form the local record office or other holder of the master film/fiche assuming it is possible to get film/fiche for the particular parish. 3. The sponsor is told of the cost. 4. Sponsor pays half the cost and the SoG pays the other half. 5. SoG orders the material and advises sponsor when it arrives. 6. Sponsor has 3 months use of the registers either at the SoG or at home. 7. At the end of the 3 months, the registers are available for general use at Charterhouse Buildings. Definitely a win/win situation for both parties. Frank Hardy -----Original Message----- From: Joan Vinall [mailto:jvinall@onetel.com] Sent: 29 December 2005 10:32 To: SOG-UK-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [SoG] 1841 and 1851 online census services I thought I would let this list know how useful my 72 hour access to Britishorigins has been over this holiday period. A 20 year 'brick wall' now has a door, thanks to Britishorgins.com. There seems not to be a marriage at the GRO indexes for my Great Grandparents CAROLINE HUNT and CHARLES FLAY. Caroline without fail on later Census gave her birthplace as Bridgwater, Somerset, but I had never tracked her down, except to find that there are at least 3 Caroline HUNT, all aged 14 or 15 on the 1851 Census. 1861 has Caroline and Charles FLAY married and living at home with Father-in-Law Thomas FLAY in Frog Lane, Calne, Wiltshire. I have a Disk from Archived CD books of 1841 Bridgewater, but after a painstaking search with no index failed to find any suitable HUNT family. Therefore access to 1841 was quite exciting as I found her aged 4. That Census was taken on June 6, 1841, which means she was 4 years old before June of that year, so probably born before the first Registration in 1837, but I am very grateful for this progress after many frustrating years. I will now have to find some way of consulting the Parish Registers of COSSINGTON. Joan Vinall 3839 in Berkshire also researching VINALL in London and Sussex BOSWELL in Oxfordshire and Surrey.
