Nancy As your grandfather was reasonably senior, the RAMC Museum may have some information about him. The will not have his service record but its probable that information may be held in any histories which proliferated after the Great War. The museum is at Ash Vale, Aldershot and their web site is at http://www.ams-museum.org.uk/museum/contact-us/ They may make a charge for researching their records but an email to the Curator should elicit the situation. It may also be possible to find Earl Haigh's despatch, TNA at Kew would be the starting point. Good hunting. Blair

It must be a technical problem, as no announcement has been made on the GBHGIS list where information about Vision of Britain and the wider Great Britain Historical GIS project is posted. The last announcement (in April) was that they had secured a funding to start work on adding earlier administrative units - ancient parishes, hundreds, manors and vills. Hello list I've used the Vision of Britain website (www.visionofbritain.org.uk/) on a number of occasions in the past, and very useful it has been; however, trying to access it every day this week I have been unsuccessful. Does anyone know if there are problems with the site, or has it shut down or moved? Thanks Colin
You could hunt down the war diaries at the National Archives to see if there is any mention of the activity in which he was involved. I've tried that for a friend whose grandfather too was mentioned in dispatches, to no avail unfortunately, but he was an 'other ranks' maybe 'cos your man is an officer and obited in the Times that there might be something? But then again looking at your post perhaps all these records don't exist? It is quite likely that there is no individual citation. The London Gazette dated 10 July 1919 is a supplement to the issue dated 8 July and states that it is a continuation of a list accompanying a despatch to the War Office by Haigh in March 1919. Given that the despatch was sent several months after the cessation of hostilities the people "mentioned" were probably recommended by their commanding officers for meritorious service rather than individual acts of gallantry. I met this situation while researching my late father in law's service record in ww2. Regards George Bush
Many thanks for the suggestions everyone . His name was Lt Col Ernest G Ffrench MD FRCSE MRCP and he was with the RAMC in the Boer War, Jamaica, India & in WW1 he ran field hospitals 51 & 56 at Etaples,+ serving at Vimy Ridge,Bethune & Arras. His photos show the Oakleaf emblem for MIDs The Times carried his obituary in full 2 Aug 1937 stating he was twice mentioned in despatches. The Times online(Search on "Mentioned...") has long lists of MIDs in Egypt,Mesopotamia,Archangel,Murmansk,Italy,Sudan etc but strangely there appears to be no list for France where presumably the bulk of MIDs were earned. The London Gazette has various references to his service but no mention of an MID. Of course what one would dearly like is the actual citation but the complete lack of service records for RAMC personnel mean this source is not available. But presumably the citations were sent somewhere in the British Army so surely there must be a copy somewhere? Mentions in Despatches (None) First listed in LG of 9th May 1843. Sometimes referred to as MID and physically denoted by an oak leaf emblem. Prior to fourth quarter 1916 these were not indexed and were included in the dispatches themselves. After this time they are listings of the names of those commended with where and when - not why. Grandfather was in the Royal Army Medical Corps, most of which's records were destroyed by fire. His entry in Peterkins Army records says; " Despatches 10 Jul 19". That is a Mentioned In Despatches [MID] and on his British War Medal, there is an "oak leaf" which apparently signifies an MID. In 1919 he was still in charge of a Military Hospital in France so he must have been MID for his work there. The citation was probably lost when that fire destroyed the RAMC records. Well thank you everyone. Mission accomplished. I used The Times online Archive (Free through my local library). There were indeed 2 events for debutantes--presentation to the King & the Debs ball. The list of those presented at Court is Official & comprehensive but its best to search by first name not surname--or by the mother who presented her daughter's name. The Ball attendees list is not complete only showing "leading lights". In the list of those presented are details of the girl and her mother's dresses! In my great aunt/grandmothers case both modestly acquired from Marshall & Snelgove. It must have been an expensive year for my poor grandfather! Once again Thank you! Thanks for the reassurance. Actually I learned many years ago that when faced with a task outside your comfort zone, the first thing to do is find out if you can call on the services of someone with specialised knowledge and /or talent. So although I have already looked for family connections, including witnesses, I will take your advice and try again, but a little more thoroughly this time. Regards George
Hi Nancy, As one of my Rootsweb fellow Listers always says "Remember GOOGLE is your friend!" I just put in English Debutantes 1930 and came up with many sites to look at. Did you try that? I've never researched the topic before myself, but it appears that the yearly function is called Queen Charlotte's Ball and some of the sites have photos taken during the 1930's. I would also search "Queen Charlotte's Ball". A search engine only looks for the words you ask for so sometimes you have to be creative. Happy researching. I believe these lists were published in the Court Circular? So the Times archive online may show what you want. Best regards Blair
There are some details listed on The Times Online, I used "Debutantes Ball" and restricted dates to 1930-39 for a search. Not all Deb Balls were at the Palace though. They were held in various hotels etc. For example the Court Circular for published 17 May 1934 says that Prince George attended the Debutantes Ball at the Dorchester Hotel in aid of the King Edward Memorial Hospital, Ealing. Then goes on to list attendees and acceptees - who may not have been the same thing! JK On 17 June 2011 22:49, Keith Atkinson <[email protected]> wrote: > Ok here's a really basic question! To reassure George Bush and others, this is absolutely the right place to raise a query like the one about Buckhurst Hill parish. The Society started this mailing list precisely to provide a forum where genealogical questions could be raised, answered and debated, As one of the team who deal with advice queries within Charterhouse Buildings and at Family History Fairs, we work on the principle that no question is stupid. Hi Andrew It is certainly possible that Nancy Viney was servant to someone with houses in both Soho and Buckhurst Hill and I will try to follow that one up. Thomas Shield was a printer so I think it much less likely that he lived and worked in Buckhurst Hill at the time of his marriage. Thanks for your help George
