List administrators were recently sent the message below indicating that as of 2 March 2020, all RootsWeb mailing lists would close. Further discussion and queries can be placed on the message boards at <https://www.ancestry.com/boards/> The message boards are free to use and only require a one-time registration with a valid email address and a name. Message from RootsWeb: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. > >Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. >From the RootsWeb home page: Update: January 23, 2018 "Great news on the progress of getting RootsWeb back online. Today, we are bringing WorldConnect, one of our most valued features, back online. As we make WorldConnect available, it will initially be in a read only state. You can now search for people and view information as you did in the past; but for now, we cannot accept new uploads or modifications to existing GEDCOM files. We expect to add this additional functionality in the coming weeks. "Also, here are answers to a few questions we’ve heard from the community: "Why is this taking so long? RootsWeb has many terabytes of data uploaded by users across its various features. The site also has hundreds of thousands of lines of code. We have been scanning the data using a variety of tools, and that takes time. We’ve also been examining the code and the underlying systems. Some code is being refurbished, and some will need to be more fully rewritten to add the layers of security needed in this day and age. We know it may be frustrating, but we are committed to returning data to you in a safe manner. "Have you found any other security problems? We haven’t found any other problems, but we want to thoroughly update systems to ensure the safety of your information. "Is Ancestry going to start charging for RootsWeb? Ancestry is not going to start charging for RootsWeb. When functionality returns to the site, you will still be able to view content for free. "I’ve heard not everything is coming back online, is that true? We will be returning WorldConnect and Mailing Lists back to their full functionality. Other features are still being evaluated. In cases where we are unable to bring back previous functionality or content, we will explore ways for people who uploaded data to retrieve it if we don’t feel we can put it back online safely. Hello everyone In case you haven't been keeping up with the news, Ancestry has posted additional information about the RootsWeb outage at http://www.rootsweb.com/ I'm very happy to report that the administrative tools now seem to be working and administrators can again take action when messages don't make it to the list because they're too big or have other problems. This is the first in a very long time that Ancestry staff has been communicative about the issues affecting RootsWeb. Excellent progress. A very happy new year to you all! Let's go break down some brick walls. Lynne list admin.

Hello all Please don't click on the link that was included in the previous email purporting to be from me -- I didn't send it. Sorry! My email account was hacked. I've spent the last few hours running various antivirus programs, changing email passwords, and removing the original message from the list archives. Lynne
Forgot to tell you how to get to the beta search form. Doh! You can read the message from Jim Mosher, Ancestry Product Management, at http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/topics.ancestry.ancimprovements/2580/mb.ashx To use the updated forms, follow this link: http://search.ancestry.com/search/?sfs=1 To go back to the original forms without closing your browser: http://search.ancestry.com/search/?sfs=0 Lynne
If you use Ancestry and have been frustrated with the search function, you may be interested to know that staff have been working on some updates to the search forms and would like to get your feedback. There's a survey at https://jfe.qualtrics.com/form/SV_3f1EI3OIP3H1c4l which includes a text field into which you can post specific suggestions. Lynne
Hello all A few months ago a number of Internet Service Providers changed the way they process incoming email and rejected any messages coming from mailing lists with the subscribers's email address in the "From" field. The change was made by the ISPs in order to reduce spam by those faking the "From" field. Unfortunately, this change caused a number of subscribers to be unsubscribed from RootsWeb lists since their ISPs were rejecting list mail. To ensure RootsWeb mail gets delivered to all subscribers, there's been a change in the way the "From" field displays in RootsWeb messages. The change means that when you send mail to the list, the "From" field will display the name you've set up in your own email program followed by "via" and then the list's email address. This change may also affect how you reply to the list. To avoid problems, when replying to list messages be sure to select "Reply All" and then double-check that the list's address appears in the "To" field. My apologies for informing you after the fact, but list administrators were not notified in advance of this change so we were unable give subscribers a heads-up. Best wishes, Lynne
Hello everyone We're baaaaaaaack! As you may have noticed, messages have started flowing on RootsWeb mailing lists following the distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Ancestry. The Help Desk personnel have not posted a status message on the Help page (http://rootsweb.custhelp.com/) nor has staff let administrators know what's going on with the mailing lists, so we don't know what has happened with messages that were sent to the lists but not delivered over the last week and a half. Am keeping my fingers crossed that messages that went astray during the outage will eventually be distributed. Until we know that everything is copasetic, it would be wise to keep copies of messages you send to the lists in your email Sent folder and double-check that the messages actually reached the list by checking that you received list copies or that there's copies in the list's archives. Thanks for your patience. Happy researching! Lynne list admin.
Hello everyone Have you noticed fewer emails in your InBox over the last few days? You may have been the victim of your ISP's block of RootsWeb mail, as I have been. Word is that all is well now. To catch up on what you may have missed, visit the list's archives. You may have bounced off very busy lists. Go to Password Central (http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.ancestry.com/) and complete the form to receive an email with the names of the lists to which you are subscribed. If you are a My Account user, you can sign in and see the lists to which you are subscribed there. You'll need to resubscribe to any lists missing from the email (or My Account). If you've sent messages to any list administrators over the last few days, the messages may not have been received so you should consider resending your message. Kind regards, Lynne

Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter-- http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2010/04/facebook-retroactively-makes-more-user-data-public.html Quote - Facebook has decided to retroactively move more information into the public, indexable part of profiles. The new profile parts made public are: a list of things users have become 'fans' of (now renamed to 'likes'), their education and work histories, and what they list under 'interests.' Apparently there is neither any opt-out nor even notice to users, despite the fact that some of this information was entered by users at a time when Facebook's privacy policy explicitly promised that it wouldn't be part of the public profile." In fact, Facebook recently removed its users' ability to control who can see their own interests and personal information. Merry Christmas to you, too, Admin! I have enjoyed networking with other Louisiana genealogy researchers this year. The Louisiana Genealogy Blog Yahoo group has grown to 99 members, My Heritage Louisiana Genealogy Blog has 13 members with 10,000 visitors, and there have been over 29,000 visitors to the Louisiana Genealogy Blog on blogger. Whew! That's alot of visits in three short years. Of course there are all of my Facebook friends, Twitter friends and genealogy groups that I belong to, that I wish a very safe and happy new year. The Louisiana Cemetery Preservation NING has enjoyed a few successes this year too and now has a nice collection of photographs thanks to those who have submitted them. Of course, these photos are of abandoned or neglected cemeteries. The NING has over 50 members now. I hope that the social networking sites created in the last year or so have been somewhat helpful to genealogy and cemetery researchers. Even if the social networking groups/sites are not active daily, they are of some use to someone. Have a great holiday season everyone!
