Goodness, but Ida Croxall did have an amazing background. I think it should qualify for a genealogy prize, maybe for best screenplay. I did at last find what I wanted to find about the Bible Institute in downtown Los Angeles. What I wanted to find was its buildingwise geographical proximity to the Church of the Open Door (and to the "JESUS SAVES" sign). The answer was, of course, in the first place I should have looked, but had forgotten about. From the BOOK, "Los Angeles: A Guide to the City and Its Environs," by the Writers' Program, Work Projects Administration, 1941, second edition much expanded 1951 (with some of the all-caps stuff retyped in lower case), page 163: "The Bible Institute of Los Angeles, 558 S. Hope St., a co-educational, nondenominational evangelistic training school. occupies the 13-story south wing of its own building adjoining the Public Library. In this wing are the classrooms, dormitories, and cafeteria of the institute. The 10-story central section of the three- unit structure -- like the other sections, ornamented with modified Renaissance details -- is an auditorium used by the nonsectarian Church of the Open Door. In the north wing is a privately operated hotel. Atop the building are two large signs stating in neon-lighted letters, "JESUS SAVES," and 11 manually operated bells upon which hymns are played three times daily. The Institute, an outgrowth of a young men's Bible class of 1906, offers day and evening theological instruction, and grants the degrees of Bachelor of Theology, Bachelor of Christian Education, and Bachelor of Sacred Music." Now, remember that Ida Croxall was there in 1930, and this was before the program at the Institute was expanded to four years of study. She was with an early version of the above. And the big sign on the roof was added in 1935, no doubt after Ida had gone her way. OK. Enough about that sign. I just wanted to get where things were put sorted out correctly.
