Hi, I'm trying to find anyone researching these STOKES lines. According to Bancroft's Pioneer Register and Index, page 343-344..."Edward,1840, Engl. sailor who came from Hon. on the Fly, having possibly visited Ca. before. iv. 104, 120"...and "(James), 1834(?), Engl. sailor who in Cal. became a doctor; first appearing on the records of '35, when he served as consulting physician in the case of Gov.Figueroa, but prob. left some vessel a year or two earlier. iii.412, 296" I have the names of their wives...Edward married Maria del Refugio Ortega in San Diego, 12 Jun 1842; James married Maria Josefa de los Dolores Soto in Monterey, 12 Feb 1844... and most of their children, and descendants...what I'm trying to find is more about the parents of these two men, and to see if they were brothers, cousins...or related at all. I have the names of Edward's parents...or a version of their names from the marriage record: "Eduardo Estoc y de Mary Camoes?, del Pueblo de Plymouth en Ynglaterra" (Thomas W Temple, II abstracts of Mission records). Would the ship records for Monterey and/or San Diego be available for those years...1834 and 1840? Where would I find something like that? Thanks in advance for any help! Sheila :) PS I'm sending this message to several lists, so if you receive multiple copies, that's why!
