    3. My niece's 4th Grade California mission project is due much sooner than I had anticipated. We're going to have to take a few shortcuts, so I'm asking for help! My niece (Morgan) has selected San Gabriel Mission for her project. Okay, so maybe she was coaxed a little to choose San Gabriel. One of the things I'd like for Morgan to understand and convey in her report is how far the early Californians had to travel to marry at the mission. I thought she could document a few marriages by finding proof (or at least a reference) of the marriage taking place at San Gabriel; find the bride and groom in the 1850 census; use one of the rancho maps (I believe I have several) to illustrate where the couple lived and how far the rancho was from the mission. We could actually go earlier than 1850 by leaving out the census reference. Here's the shortcut we're thinking of taking: Does anyone have an ancestor we could borrow? If you know that a couple was married at San Gabriel and that there are references available to us, we'd appreciate some names. And if the same ancestors were baptized at San Gabriel AND are buried there, that would show how much the mission was a part of the early Californian's lives. Rather than build a mission - so overdone! and there are even kits you can buy now to make it easier for the parents to get the job done in time! - Morgan will be visiting San Gabriel for her extra credit. She will be taking photographs of the cemetery and stones. We appreciate any help or hints. Karla in Bakersfield --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
