The lid is on at Chino, and the thirsty ones can no longer hope for anything stronger than pop or lemonade. The lima bean raisers up around Santa Barbara are said to be rolling in wealth this season, and automobiles are being purchased with reckless abandon. Newport Beach now believes it is rid of all its blind pigs, but these pernicious creatures have a most provoking way of regaining their eyesight when least expected. A Pasadena blind-pigger named Shirk has been sent to the pen - a place where Mr. Shirk can't. 25 YEARS AGO TODAY (From the Express of July 15, 1882.) Richard Gird of the Chino ranch arrived overland this morning. Tracklaying is now being pushed with all possible speed on the California Southern railroad, toward Colton. A. Wheeler of Los Angeles has been appointed teacher for the grammar department of the Westminster public school.. Eight foreign vessels are now lying in the harbor at Wilmington, discharging coal for the Southern Pacific railroad. The telephone system of San Bernardino county is now extended to Redlands, a new place springing up near Riverside. It is stated that a large number of persons are leaving Calico City on account of sickness. The hot weather and the bad water have had much to do with the epidemic. Calico probably never will be a good summer camp. H. J. Woollacott of this city yesterday shipped a lot of wines to Grand Rapids, Mich., for medical purposes. It was all the Los Angeles product. Gen. J. R. Brierly has been appointed collector of the port of Wilmington. B. Flotte started yesterday morning to visit his family and his many friends there.
