The Reverend Lonnie Ferguson officiated. Interment followed in the Arvin district Cemetery. Mr. Underwood was born in Sequoia County, Oklahoma. He came to Arvin in 1936 and owned and operated "Les's" Grocery Store until 1972. He was elected to City council when Arvin was incorporated. When Mayor Robert Bunch passed away, Les was appointed Mayor Pro-Tem. He is survived by a son, James Dale Underwood of Bakersfield; daughters, Cheryl Carter of Arvin, Mary Wilkerson of Lamont and Teresa Hicks of Bakersfield. Brothers, Robert and Lynn both of Bakersfield and Bill of Joshua Tree, CA. Sister Ethel Krumseik of Oregon. Also grandchildren: Billy and Kenny Waters, Jodie Peralez all of Arvin; Leah, Freddie, Jr. and Caryn Hicks all of Bakersfield. Lorenda and Regina Wilkerson both of Lamont; Great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Robyn Waters, Kendra Peralez all of Arvin.
