"Denny" Powell was born Aug. 10, 1913 in Twin Rock above Laytonville, Mendocino county, California. He passed away in Bakersfield on Aug. 18, 1994. He attended school at Twin Rock until he was about 10 or 11 years of age. Then his family moved to San Jose, Calif. When he was 16 or 17 years old, he moved back to the ranch at Twin Rock. His brothers and he worked part time in the woods and operated equipment. When World War II came, he joined the Army with his brother John and served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. After the war, he worked in and around Bakersfield and Santa Maria as a crane operator. He married Inez Rice on Aug. 1, 1946. They had two children, Darlene and Denise. In 1947, he joined Griffin Steel and supply and Griffin Steel Fabricators, and later became vice president. He also became owner of Powell Crane Services. In the two companies, he assisted in erecting hundred of buildings and structures from El Centro to Sacramento and San Francisco. He was an avid big game hunter and eagerly awaited the opening of each season. This did not hinder his extreme compassion for many humans in less fortunate circumstances than his own. An extremely honest person, he touched the lives of many people for the better. Survivors include his loving wife, Inez; daughters and sons-in-law, Darlene and Dr. Charles Salik, Denise and William McCarthy; a sister Ruth Rodaer of Sacramento and a brother, George Powell of Bakersfield. He will be loved and missed by his family and friends. Sharon Kern Co. Volunteer
