C-19 FLANAGIN, Charles Mills - A memorial service will be hald at the First Presbyterian Church, 1705 17th St., Thursday, June 28 at 2 p.m., for Charles Mills Flanagin, who went to be with the Lord June 24, 1990, after a lengthy illness. Dr. Donald Buteyn will officiate. Mr. Flanagin was born June 18, 1909 in Burlingame, Kansas, where his father was a Baptist minister. In high school he was an all-area selection in football. Later at the University of Redlands he was again active in athletics. He was selected as bass soloist for the University Glee Club. He received his B.A. in 1931 and his M.A. in 1946. Charles was an athletic coach and instructor in the Kern Union High School District for 34 years. He served in the Navy 1943-1946 and retired as a Lt. Commander. He sang bass in the Anchor Four quartet along with beloved friends Ed Hemmerling, Judd Fleming, and Joe Coleman. Mr. Flanagin was an elder in the Presbyterian church and a life member of CTA and NRTA. He is survived by his beloved wife, Thelma; a son, Pat and Dian Glanagin of Bakersfield; a daughter, Karen Long of Billings, Montana; sisters, Zelma Westphal and Mildred Rous of Redlands, Marian and Boyd Georgie of Laguna Beach, and sister-in-law, Nina Janes of Santa Cruz; step-children Gordon and Joyce Downs, Judy and Son Affonso, Patty and Gene Brown; grandchildren, Diana, Theresa, Carl and Heather Long, Debbie and Sandy Downs, Kenny and Sandi Downs, Brant and Bonita Ambrose, Tim and Bob Ambrose, Jeff and Lori Affonso, Marci and Bob Hall, Stephanie and Alan Schmidt, Coleen and Bob Kapral, Matt and Anne Benton, Cary and Shani Steinbeck; great grandchildren, Steven Downs, Eric and Ryan Hall, Alyssa and Kristin Kaparal, and Robin and Andrew Benton. Honorary pallbearers will be Ed Hemmerling, Judd Fleming, Joe Coleman Stan Kahl, Roger Chichester, Harry Hildebrecht, Glenn Walling, John Varner & Les Carpenter. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the Charles M. Flanagin Music Scholarship Fund c/o First Presbyterian Church. Sharon Kern Co. Volunteer
