    3. Hope someone finds this of interest. She was my great-grand-aunt and a daughter of Seth Cook, Jr. of KY & MO. I found this newspaper clipping among some of my grandparents' things. Thanks to Charlie Cook for helping me make the connection. PAYNE SERVICES TO BE HELD SATURDAY Pioneer Citizen, 79, to Be Buried in Greenlawn Memorial Park Funeral services for Mrs. Mattie [Cook] Payne, 79-year-old pioneer Bakersfield resident and active club worker who died at her home, 2311 Nineteenth Street, yesterday [Nov. 12, 1941], will be held Saturday at 11 a. m. Place of the services had not been announced today. Mrs. Payne, who had resided in Bakersfield since 1902, was born in Cook county, Ill., in 1862, coming to California in 1887. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late J. C. Payne, who died in 1938. Among fraternal and civic organizations in which Mrs. Payne was active are the Bakersfield Rebekah Lodge, Bakersfield Chapter No. 125, Order of Eastern Star; Infants' Friend League, Woman's Club, W. C. T. U., Lydia Circle of the Christian Church and the First Christian Church. She is survived by a son, J. Bruce Payne, Bakersfield; three grandchildren, James Bruce Payne, New York, Fred M. Payne, Bakersfield, and Mrs. Evelyn Payne Agee, Bakersfield, and several nieces in southern California. The Reverend B. B. Baird will officiate at the services, with Florence Bayless at the organ and Richard Skinner and Pauline Willis as soloists. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Park beside her late husband.
