Source: San Diego Marriage Book 4-228 License: These presents are to authorize and license any Justice of the Supreme Court, District or County Judge, Justice of the Peace, Mayor, Priest or Minister of the Gospel of any denomination to solemnize, within said county, the marriage of S. A. McDowell, native of New York, age 37 years, resident of Julian, County of San Diego, State of California, and Belle McKnight, native of Ohio, aged 28 ( or 25) years, resident of Banner, County of San Diego, State of California. Said parties being of sufficient age to be capable of contracting marriage. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the Seal of the County Court of said county this 5th day of June AD 1877. by A. (?) Grant, Deputy Clerk Certificate: I hereby certify that I believe the facts stated in the abovew license to be true and that upon due inquiry there appears to be no legal impediment to the marriage of said S. A. McDowell and Belle McKnight, that said parties were joined in marriage by me on the 24th day of June AD 1877 in Banner, said county and state; that L. B. Kelman, a resident of Julian, County of San Diego, State of California was present at witness of said ceremony. The parents of S. A. McDowell were natives of the State of New York and those of Belle McKnight were natives of Ohio. Belle McKnight was married before - husband still living.
