This is the last township requested by Edward Black on this SOCAL list, regarding his 1870 census work, except to explain why Anaheim/Santa Ana was all messed up LOS ANGELES TOWNSHIP: Source: Reproduction of "History of Los Angeles County California..." [long title], Thompson & West, publishers, Oakland, CA, 1880. "The following is a list of the ranches in Los Angeles township, with their respective acreage, and the name of the person to whom each was confirmed by the United States Courts, after the American occupation: --" [Table showing Ranchos Tujunga, San Rafael, Providencia, La Canada, and Los Felis, plus the "Pueblo, City of Los Angeles"] The old ranchos appear to correspond to these modern places: Tujunga - Hansen Dam area and south La Canada - Sunland, La Crescenta, La Canada Flintridge San Rafael - Verdugo hills, Sun Valley, Burbank, Glendale Providencia - North Hollywood Los Felis - Griffith Park, part of Glendale The ranchos are shown on a map in "Los Angeles In Civil War Days, 1860-65," by John W. Robinson, Dawson's Book Shop (publisher), 1977. The city/pueblo of Los Angeles appears to be nearly a square, not exactly six miles on a side, corresponding to the survey block of township 1 south, range 13 west, but shifted south a mile or two. (See map in "City Makers: The Story of Southern Californias First Boom, 1868-76," by Remi Nadeau, Trans-Anglo Books, Los Angeles, 1965 -- an 1873 ad for Stearns Ranchos.)
