As a reminder, this is a reply to Edward Black's query about a specific list of L.A. townships, 1870. He needs the info to help transcribe the 1870 L.A. Co. census for posting on the net. I am posting to the list because I suppose others might be interested. Also, I am *NOT* an expert, and I am hoping for corrections from people who know better. There are only two more on Mr. Black's list, L.A. Township, and "Anaheim-Santa Ana Township." From what I discovered today, Anaheim/Santa Ana may be too complex for me, thus skipped, leaving only ONE more to go, L.A. Township. The end is in sight! OK. SAN GABRIEL TOWNSHIP: Source: Reproduction of "History of Los Angeles County, California..." [long title], Thompson & West, publishers, Oakland, CA, 1880. "The township of San Gabriel extends southward from the southern boundary of Soledad township, and comprises within its limits the San Pasqual Rancho, a part of the Santa Anita Rancho, and some two hundred acres of church property, confirmed to the San Gabriel Mission. The northern half of the township is covered by the Coast Range [San Gabriel Mountains], which forms a majestic background to the valley. South-west of the latter, low rolling hills temper the sea-breeze, while scarcely obstructing the view. Far as the eye can see to the south and east extend the level lands of San Jose and El Monte, forming as it were, one continuous valley, whose different portions have adopted different names." Why the author says that San Jose Township is to the south of San Gabriel Township I cant imagine, as San Jose is far to the east, unless a wing of San Jose Township sneaks by across the south of both San Gabriel and El Monte Townships sort of like a panhandle. San Gabriel Township contained the Mission San Gabriel, San Gabriel Village around the mission, Pasadena, and Sierra Madre Villa. For the moment, I suppose that Sierra Madre Villa became today's Sierra Madre. Rancho San Pasqual was located about where Altadena and Pasadena are today, perhaps including northern San Marino. San Gabriel Township probably included today's Altadena, Pasadena, at least part of San Marino, all of Sierra Madre, and maybe some or all of Arcadia and Temple City. This is, of course only an educated guess. Lester Powers lesterps@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
