    3. Edward Black asked about a list on townships in L.A. County of 1870. Source: Reproduction of "History of Los Angeles County California..." [long title], Thompson & West, publishers, Oakland, CA, 1880. WILMINGTON TOWNSHIP: "Wilmington township contains two large grants of land, entitled respectively Rancho San Pedro and Rancho Los Palos Verdes, also small portions of the San Antonio and Tajanta Ranchos." There is no way I'm going to promise this is true, but it looks like Wilmington Township included what is today the Palos Verdes peninsula, Torrance, Compton, Carson, Wilmington, and San Pedro. The eastern border may have run somewhere along the Los Angeles River. Very hard to say. This is blurry stuff. Town of COMPTON, within Wilmington Township: I thought someone might get a kick out of this, so to speak: "There is no saloon in the place. There have been four started in succession, and all starved out. The last one traded his house and stock for a shot gun. There is said to be not brandy enough in the district to make sauce for a pudding." Compton was within Wilmington Township. Kinda sorta looks like it was at Wilmington's northeast corner. Two maps show Compton at the same location where it is today, both in the book: "City-Makers: The Story of Southern California's First Boom, 1868-76," by Rami Nadeau, Trans-Anglo Books, Los Angeles, 1965. Speaking of maps, well, remember how last time I said that the settlement of Spadra was in SAN JOSE TOWNSHIP? The "City-Makers" map shows Spadra located east of the San Jose hills (which are north of the Puente hills) and west of Pomona, where Pomona has the same location it does today, at least approximately. More later, unless someone yells 'cause I talk too much. Lester Powers lesterps@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
