Obits in LA are very difficult for a variety of reasons, no the least of which is that most of the papers from back then are out of business. They either were bought or merged with a competitor, or just failed in business. The succeeding papers rarely kept the competitors files. The major paper remaining is the LA Times, & they don't seem to have published many obits unless the person had some measure of fame. There are a few suburban papers. Generally the most productive path is to get the death certificate information and contact the mortuary. If they can find their old files, they may have a copy of the obit, or be able to advise what paper(s) it was submitted to. If some staff employee is motivated to help, I highly recommend a small box of chocolates.
