From "Nuestro Pueblo - Los Angeles, City of Romance" Copyright 1940, by Charles H. Owens and Joseph F. Seewerker LAIR OF THE BACHELORS Nearly a hundred strong, the bachelors live in the Old-Timers’ Village at 609 East Second Street, Los Angeles. They spent their lives hunting placers in the mountains, chasing the mother lode, building such great projects as the great aqueduct across the Sierras. The twilight of their lives has come, now. They have done with blasting and drilling hard rock, risking their necks on dizzy slopes, going hungry and thirsty. But the habit of living in womanless places is too strong to be broken. In the Village of Old-Timers they have a community wash-house and kitchen. They do their own laundering, cook their own meals, clean their own rooms, just as they did in camps of desert and mountain and forest. Not a woman lives in the Village. The old-timers continue as they were in youth, reverent of womankind but shying from the feminine control of their lives.
