    1. January at the Southern California Genealogical Society
    2. Paula Hinkel
    3. Happy 2006 to all our Southern California genealogists! It's time to get organized and get back to work on all those projects that we all set aside during the holidays. The SCGS is going to help! With the educational programs slated for January, you'll find many opportunities to brush up on your skills and learn new ones. Saturday, January 14, 2006 - Lunch and Learn 12:00 p.m. LUNCH (brown bag or order something from the pizza/sandwich shop on the corner) 1:00 p.m. - LEARN Our first class in the SCGS "Lunch and Learn" series will be conducted by Charlotte M. Bocage, Board member and chairman of SCGS's education and outreach activities. Charlotte's presentation -- "I Thought I Was Organized So Don't Do What I Did" -- is just the perfect motivation to organizing those mountains of records that we all accumulate. Charlotte has over forty years of genealogy experience. She is a full-time genealogist, lecturer, author, Louisiana specialist, and UCLA graduate. This busy lady is also the Educational Director of the African American Genealogy for Youth Center; the First Vice President, California African American Genealogical Society; president of the Atwater Village Historical Society, a member of the Genealogical Speakers Guild, and many other genealogical and historical societies. Meeting is free and open to the public. Sunday, January 15, 2006 - ISOGG DNA Interest Group 10:00 a.m. Learn to create a DNA project webpage or family website using MS Frontpage! Katherine Borges of the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) will be conducting a workshop on Sunday, January 15th, 10am-2pm in the Library. Meeting is free and open to the public. Saturday, January 21, 2006 - Beginning German Research Workshop 1:00 p.m. On Saturday, January 21 at 1 p.m. at the SCGS Library, the German Interest Group will host a Beginning German Research workshop. Topics to be discussed include: 1. How many ways are there to find the origins of our German family members? Have you utilized all the sources, such as queries, newspaper, church records, books and periodicals? 2. How do you research records when you don't know the language? 3. How do you find your family when you're not sure of the name or community? The ultimate objective of researchers tracing German family history, workshop organizers say, should be "to keep turning pages and pushing buttons until everyone has found the original spelling of the name and the community of origin of their German ancestors." The library will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The workshop starts at 1:00 p.m. and research assistance will begin at 2:00. The meeting is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to come with questions and bring their pedigree charts and family group sheets.
